Johnsson gave a discount??
he is a 24y old player that had 43 points on Matthews line and on PP, and it took him until he was 24y to actually make NHL.
24y is the age most players in NHL are at their peak (points production concerned).
it is a significant overpayment on a 4y deal for Johnsson. - MaximusAurelius
Johnson is a great deal for both sides. I expect 50-60 points next year, which in this NHL is a 6 million dollar player.

I'm gonna have to disagree and say that Marner resigning is an adamantium lock but I have wrong at least two or three times. Maybe two and a half. - Zezel
This is completely new to the NHL...
The players are playing hardball and I think its time the GMs start playing hardball.
but know knows maybe he talks to some other GMs this week and hears "lol theres no way we are giving you 11 million either" |

yeah not all of them, but most.
it's not even 1st of July and Marner is getting more criticism by Leafs fans for not signing than Nylander 30th of November...
I think it's a very dirty tactic by Dubas saying that 'we cannot do anything until Marner signs' - implicitly putting the blame on Marner not signing on the player.
Leafs should give marner a 11.616mln/8y deal and very likely he'll sign it. - MaximusAurelius
I don't know what you're talking about. Bill Ny was heavily criticised.
The only reason Marner is getting it now and early is because his agent is completely and entirely negotiating through the media and threatening offersheets.
EDIT: And of course he'd sign that. He'd be getting overpaid by literal millions. |

It's because they love Marner.
Dubas is doing great. He's a genius. He's a lock for GM of the year at some point. |

Because they are Leaf fans....We have a huge fan base which means a lot more less bright individuals. |

Well, let's put it this way. I really hope he gets an offer soon he can't refuse. From another team. Then, perhaps some of our D Marlies get sufficent time to show their upside. |

why are the nylander wives criticizing marner so much early on, while defending nylander all through his hold-out?? - MaximusAurelius
Cause he didn't turn down an overpayment?
Cause he didn't seek out offersheets?
Cause he wasn't mouthpiecing the media every day?

thinking about this a bit more, it is not very likely any GM in league is offering Marner an offersheet, just to facilitate him to get a 10.5mln/5y deal by leafs.
the only real way for an offersheet would be to offer him 13-14mln on a one year deal, with the understanding that a 11.5mln AAV/ 8y deal will be offered by the team in Jan/Feb 2020 for Marner to sign.
NYR are in a position to make a 13-14mln 1y offer - in particular if they indeed trade a few of their other players (Vesey and Kreider rumoured to be gone).
No way Leafs are matching a 14mln 1y deal. - MaximusAurelius
sure. take the 4 1sts then. rags are the only real threat with cap space and cash to throw down a threatening offer sheet.
let them deal with minimum 15.4M in 2020-2021 if that's the case. would be stupid to make marner the highest paid player in the league by a pretty big margin.

Yeah.
Marner is actually holding up the team right now...Thats not just on him though but the Leafs simply can't have him at the number he wants.
Kap and Johnnson took friendly deals and I expect Marner to take a reasonable deal as well...THAT IS..if he wants to be Leaf.
He can get his 10.5 million elsewhere it just won't be on the Leafs. |

Look at that. A player sacrificing money for term because he really wants to be there. And agent doing his job and listening to his client.
Notes should be taken! - GreatGigInTheSky[/quote
Yes only $6 million is a decent deal for Vegas, but I heard they threw in 8 year VIP Pass to the Dovetail Ranch

They still would have time to show their upside if Gardiner was re signed and they added a RHD...They aren't ready for top 4 mins. |

great idea to give up on a player that will be one of the best 5 FWs league during next 10 seasons.
in fact, any team willing to offersheet Marner will probably give him 12.25 AAV over 8 years. if you're going to pay 4 1sts, better make sure the other team doesn't match. |

Which is why Dubas said itâs possible we donât match an offer sheet. Let Mitch think carefully about signing an offer sheet from a team he might not want to play on just to put pressure on Leafs to match. |

Yep. This isnât a matter of which side will fold itâs a matter of the Leafs canât afford him at the overpaid price he wants.
The Leafs simply wonât give him that money. You donât overpay in a salary cap era. |

Leafs just overpaid Matthews on a 5y deal..
Dubas then overpaid Johnsson.
