A much needed relief but what a cost. We don’t have first rounders 2 years in a row. Over a long term, these things do come back and bite you.
Colorado looks very good after yesterday and they even have a cap space. They might stand in Leafs way even if leafs come out of the east in 2 years. |

Leaf fans "Marleau is garbage! Hes done! We cant sign our guys with him. Trade him!
Dubas trades him
Leaf fans "what?! Should have kept him for that price!"
Cap space is a premium. Subban legit got nothing because Nashville didnt have to retain anything.
Fine deal. Or look at it as Johnsson and kapanen for a late first. - Aaron_85
It is no guarantee that that is a late first. It could be a (frank)ing lottery pick.
Also, it is a late first and 2 seconds (offersheet compensation for Kapanen or Johnsson) or a Late first + the return for trading Kapanen and Johnson.
It was costly, no matter how you slice it. |

This is not entirely true, even if they don't sign the offer sheet it is still a great bargaining tool for the player. - justmike
No. The offer sheet doesn’t just come from the other team. The player has to agree and sign it. It is then binding in the original team chooses not to match. |

Carolina took that deal before Marleau's July first bonuses. Prolly could of been cheaper to do after that's date. Which make me think there up to something cuz why not wait. - Buck Norris
Buyout window ends before July 1st. Couldn’t wait it it is to be a buyout. |

It’s not going to be a lottery pick.

Dubas will compensate for it by selecting next franchise player in a few picks from now - a guy all other teams missed (because of mono probably). |

Wedgie (frank)ed us with his magic elixir !! Mutual termination didn't work. In hindsight I guess it was always as simple as Leafs told Marleau they wanted him off the books and he said he'll only waive the NMC if it lead to a buyout so he could go home.
Cost was extreme but I guess this is cheaper then what the Hawks paid to lose Bickell.
Now he's got to work some magic and improve the backline and sign those RFA's. |

Could also look at it this way. Leafs got a free superstar asset in Snake so maybe Dubas feels he can afford to eat a lemon to dump Marleau? |

I'm not saying it wasnt costly just that for the cost of cap space it's probably on par.
Its top 10 protected next year and I have a hard time seeing the leafs bottom out in the next two years.
Look at all the deals. Miller went for nothing too. All the deals are cap related and the other teams know it.
You also have no idea what the trades would be for kap or Johnsson so you're assuming theyd get those returns. I can point to the fact two other deals are done today for cap space and both those teams got nothing.
Dubas also didnt give up any prospects. |

It's nothing! Picks and a prospect for Miller? Good deal. They got the best player in the deal so it's a win. Hes a solid winger.

Who knows what else they could of gotten with those pieces...It makes them better so there is that. |

didn't like him on NYR that much - a guy that plays well in season, but disappears a bit in playoffs. a bit overrated imo. |

There's many ways to spin it...but the bottom line is we lost no one off the core from this deal..
Imagine us acquiring a 2020 first from a team that finishes lower than us......

It's very expensive.
But if it allows us to sign Marner and keep all the kids together, that's more valuable than what will likely be a low first rounder. |
