Defensive and PK ability is not something rookies are known for.

Your not replacing Kadri with empty cap space, his money is paying a new defensemen, and whoever replaces him.

- aminnes

I thought Hyman and marner were much better on the pk, and at some point Matthews should at least be on the pk as well. Moore to me is just as defensively aware as brown. If not as aware, much more tenacious.

The next Tyler Ennis.
- Steven_Seagull

Just give the habs credit, choosing him at 15 was a no brainer. I think he has as much potential as Johnny hockey and debrincat...with more similarities to the latter. The kid is going to score a lot of goals. If we had a first, he would have been who I wished for.

That is false. Plenty of rookies have put in PK time.............Hyman is one perfect example of that check his PK time in his rookie year. dont spew poop.

That would be a massive improvement over what the Leafs had this past season.

Have you ever posted a comment detailing any plans or ideas? All I ever read from you is negative nonsense. UG was never this bad. Holy poop.

Moore's good. He could help make the PK even better. Removing Brown as you say, might make it stay the same.

Uhm....

Well do the math man.........

How many rookies are there in the NHL compared to non rookies??

...

Plenty of rookies play PK. If they are good at it just like any other NHL player.

So the Leafs managed to get rid of Marleau and his contract..... It had to be done but how do you guys feel about the price paid? (I don't backread, I'm not that guy).

I feel like it has a hefty price but not as big as losing a young roster player would have been.

The coach of the Leafs has said many times the organization is trying to build solid 2 way players, and that it takes time. So many times this year he mentioned Matthews and how he is developing his defensive game, Nylander, Reilly, on and on. Anyone around hockey knows you can't teach offence, but defence is teachable.

Anyway, so trade brown then for the 1.2 million in savings that now pays the entry level centre replacing Kadri.

Yeah, even if I don't need it will use said protection.

Still sucks giving away a first rounder just get rid of one year of Patrick Marleau.

I don't get it.

Countless Habs fans told us Liljregen was not a steal because there was a reason he was passed by all those GMs.....

But the tide turns when a player falls to Montreal.

Not at all.

There are a lot of rookies that have played PK. There is only a handful of rookies in the league each year which is why there is so little.....It is not a hard concept.

Thank you Santo for correcting 100 years of coaching history for me.

There is 1 rookie forward in the top 50 in time on ice shorthanded this past season. Now, to his credit, Cirelli is 3rd overall, and plays for Tampa Bay. But again, these guys are outliers.

Oh and the previous season when Cirelli played in 18 games, he was 120 something on the list.

Hefty for sure but that's a price for cap space. Other teams also were looking to dump salary and it cost.

Subban legit was had for nothing because the devils took all 9 million.

I bet Lucic or James Neal would have cost a lot more to move them.

Mike Augello: Leafs Live Blog from Vancouver - 2019 NHL Draft - Marleau dealt to Carolina
- mikeinbuffalo

none of our draftees are bigger than 5’11🤦‍♂️

just what we need; more little pencil neck pipsqueaks who look great during the regular season then shrink like dead Richards in winter under a sheet of snow during the playoffs 🤦‍♂️

what a (frank)ing joke 🤦‍♂️

edit: nice alliteration 👍

I am disappointed in this deal. Yes, we got to keep Kapanen and Johnsson in the mix, but if we traded Marleau, Connor Brown, and a mid level prospect or pick, I think that alone gets the deal done.

And Top 10 protected? I would have been a little happier if it was the Top 15. If we do fall out of a playoff race and finish between 10 and 15, that's a good kick in the nuts having Carolina make that pick.

Marleau going had to happen. I was hoping for a little creativity instead of trading our First rounder. Now we are without two first rounders for two years in a row. It becomes more imperative to lock Muzzin up ASAP as soon as July hits.

What now? Hoping he packages Zaitsev with Brown for a mid level pick to free up the cap space to sign a vet D and backup goalie.

Very good point and agreed!
A very weak part of that deal for Toronto!

Chicago finished 12th last season and picked 3rd
Carolina finished 11th and picked 2nd in '18
Flyers finished 12th and picked 2nd in '17

It's very likely that the first rounder the Leafs gave up will be just a mid-level prospect anyway, at best.

Yes a worst-case scenario could happen where they miss the playoffs and win the lottery, but does anyone realistically want to take that bet? If you do let me know because I would love to bet money on that.

Its bad.

Real bad.

But the leafs were in cap trouble as most in the media predicted....and most on here dumped on them.

It had to be done to overpay for AJ, kap and marner.
