If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned(including that 6 mil cushion) then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.

This season the Leafs have $2,550,000 from last season counting against the cap like a phantom character guy doing some eight minute games on the fourth line. But that’s because they had what, 4/6 top6 guys on elc? And you think we are going to be 3 million over? All im pointing out is that the rollover you’ve predicted is really unlikely. Think I’m on pretty firm ground

- neem55

I didn't predict any roll over at all, ever, not even close. You better go back and read again bud.

I added in EP and QH bonuses into their cap hits because I figured they would hit them and didn't want to go over the cap because of them.

I literally pitched a JT Miller trade to my buddy at the draft 10mins before the real one was announced. I think he’s a perfect solution to the “can’t find linemates for Bo” issue. Same thing with Podkolzin - the one positive thing I said about him pre-draft was that he’d be an ideal Bo linemate (along with a guy like Miller). Anyways, seeing Benning say that Miller is a complimentary player for Petey & Boeser kind of ruined my brightside reaction to the swap. I definitely prefer him for Bo.
- DrChristianTroy

He can play anywhere in the lineup.

Yup.

What drives me crazy is that EPs acquisition changes things. Ok. So what do you do? Trade away the one tool that gets you a player like EP to only provide roster support for that player.

He’s an underrated offensive zone guy. Lot like oshie. Does a lot to create space/lanes for his teammates. I think he could do well on either line. With bo it becomes a better shutdown line. Which is pretty sweet. They probably do match styles better, but he’s a good add. Overpaid, no one is debating that but a better pickup than many seem to think.

Do we have an official date when the rebuild began yet? Jake was drafted 5 years ago Brock 4 years ago but you are saying it was 2 years ago. Was there ever a memo that came out like the Rangers did?

We all have different ideas of when the rebuild began .

- VANTEL

When they said they were on a re-build 2 years ago. I know there is no convincing you as you have been a Benning supporter since the Sedins retired (when the true rebuild started).

It's not something Toronto would have done, that's why it's questioned.

Media probably thinks giving up a 1st round pick for a player that isn't even going to play for another team is a better idea.

Giving up a 1st round pick for a player that's going to improve the team vs giving up a first round pick because they suck at cap management

hmmmm...

- manvanfan

I don't think anyone believes that giving up a 1st round pick is a good idea to get rid of a player. No one is in here saying Benning should be more like Dubas. I think the message is Benning should have been an alpha - attacked Dubas at his weakest point, or BriseBois, or McCrimmond or whoever.

I wonder what would have happened if thevCanucks had waited a day to explore this trade?

Well... Technically, yeah.

I’m a little more obsessed with compatibility and line/pairing optimization than most. Makes a huge difference IMO.

Those bonuses are absorbed by the cushion. I don’t really know how else to break it down.

The guy that said the rebuild is now on was fired shortly after and still no evidence of the rebuild. Maybe that is why.

You need to listen more carefully also because I have repeated this many times , I am not a Benning supporter and I don't care if they replace him. Just who is going to walk in and take over without going backwards again is my issue.

I don't hate everything that Benning does like you do so that is why we are always at opposites.

Apparently. He won the Calder so they are now officially a playoff team. One successful draft is all you need to be right back in the post season mix again.

You can't go over the salary cap, it's a cap. If bonuses put you over, you are allowed to apply the overage to the following season, leaving you less to spend. Nothing gets "absorbed"

It is very possible still Tanev never plays another game for Canucks. They did try to trade him in the Zucker deal.
- VANTEL

They also have to move out some forwards. Loui, Sven, Goldobin, Granlund or ??

Get that D via trade if possible Brenden Dillon perhaps, playing with Myers and BFG next year, what a wrecking crew

Add Barrie, and there you go.

Picks for next season instead?

Everybody has always loved the Teuvo Teravian trade from Chicago to Carolina.

Teuvo was a mid first round pick for Chicago who had a single season of 35 points. Chicago still got a 2nd and 3rd round pick back for him but also included was a bad contract.

Vancouver got a player who has been a consistent 40 point player and is signed long term to a decent cap hit.

If Van would have had to take a bad contract with Miller, a 2nd and 3rd would have been more reasonable. They didn't though.

The uncertainty of giving up a 1st may or may not come back to bit the Canucks in the ass. Won't know until it happens.

Should get them 1 or 2 cracks at the playoffs in the next 5 years before they start a new re-build. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new Edmonton Oilers!

So what you are saying is that they traded a 1st round pick for a Virtanen type player?

Yes. There is 6 million dollar cushion. Again, ive cited my source detailing this. I dont really see any evidence to the contrary other than you just disagreeing.

It also depends on what Tampa does with the pick

No. No one in their right minds would make that comparison. Very different .
