The risks for the leafs are different. They could still recoup 4 first round picks if someone OS Marner. But moving Marleau gave them the space to get Kappy and Andy locked down.

It's also much less likely the leafs miss the playoffs than the Canucks

- 1970vintage

No one is giving up 4 first round players. They may not have Kadri next year . They haven't improved their D . What is going on with Marner?

Just saying if Marnsey signs an OS and TO don't match that the compensation would be in the 4 firsts range.

Did you tell him you’d take Dobson in a redraft?

- DrChristianTroy

I told him I would have traded Boeser for a first and taken them both so they could be best friends forever 😍😍🎉

We were into the last month of the season in a playoff drive but getting rid of Pouliot Hutton Granlund Goldobin and replacing them with NHL players won't make a difference .

- VANTEL

Make all the difference you want, but not at the cost of the future. Spend all the money you want, but don’t hand out 1st rounders on the likes of Miller just to make the playoffs now. We’ve been down this road before and know where it leads.

Marner will be a Leaf. The most someone will offer up is 2 firsts a second and a third.Without Marner I would put money on them missing the POs

When have we been down this road? If you are talking about when we were hanging on to Burrows Sedins et al that is different directions . Those guys were on the way down this new core is on the way up.

To get back to your comment last night There was players still on the list at 10 that they wanted so no need to trade up. The players that they wanted at 15 Seider and Broberg were gone so no reason to trade down.

Yes anything that goes above the 6 million dollar cushion incurs a penalty. I dont think it very likely that it happens, certainly not the the tune you suggested. Qh and ep will surely earn bonuses. Who else? Why would it exceed 6 mil? It’s a non-issue and youve calculated into your forecast. Because of this i said they dont count. Because they dont really, cause teams dont really cross that threshold often.
- neem55

You don't get the cushion at the end of the season. You only get the cushion during the season because players may or may not hit their bonuses.

Theoretically, on day one of the season, every performance bonus on every contract for a player on the 23-man roster could be earned through the season. Assuming they are, the total of these potential bonuses must fit inside the available cap space the team has.

As fans we have been down this road. For decades, our prospect pool has been dry. Bone dry. That’s from poor drafting, lack of picks, or drafting position.

JBs drafting record has produced. Trading and signing record doesn’t look so good. Stick to what you’re good at.

I don't care about the Leafs, I care about the Canucks trading away 1st round picks in the 2nd year of a re-build.
I'm just pointing out that move is being questioned outside of this thread.

- Marwood

It's not something Toronto would have done, that's why it's questioned.

Media probably thinks giving up a 1st round pick for a player that isn't even going to play for another team is a better idea.

Giving up a 1st round pick for a player that's going to improve the team vs giving up a first round pick because they suck at cap management

Canucks carry 4.682 mil in bonuses this year and all bonuses from last year are paid out already. You are correct with your discussion about bonuses.

I also don’t understand everyone plugging in Miller with EP and Brock. Give Bo his playmaking winger, he needs it.

- Nucker101

I literally pitched a JT Miller trade to my buddy at the draft 10mins before the real one was announced. I think he’s a perfect solution to the “can’t find linemates for Bo” issue. Same thing with Podkolzin - the one positive thing I said about him pre-draft was that he’d be an ideal Bo linemate (along with a guy like Miller). Anyways, seeing Benning say that Miller is a complimentary player for Petey & Boeser kind of ruined my brightside reaction to the swap. I definitely prefer him for Bo.

You aren't understanding.

Performance Bonuses may not be earned during the regular season is why they allow for the extra percentage. At the end of the season though if the performance bonuses are earned it will then count against the cap for the season. If at that point the team goes over the cap thanks to performance bonuses it is taken off of your cap for next season.

- manvanfan

If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned(including that 6 mil cushion) then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.

This season the Leafs have $2,550,000 from last season counting against the cap like a phantom character guy doing some eight minute games on the fourth line. But that’s because they had what, 4/6 top6 guys on elc? And you think we are going to be 3 million over? All im pointing out is that the rollover you’ve predicted is really unlikely. Think I’m on pretty firm ground

Do we have an official date when the rebuild began yet? Jake was drafted 5 years ago Brock 4 years ago but you are saying it was 2 years ago. Was there ever a memo that came out like the Rangers did?

We all have different ideas of when the rebuild began .
