It might be better to sign Gardiner 2 x8.8 or 3x8 and tell him when Edlers contract is up we can do another deal.

Our GM is Jim Benning

He’s not greasy/creative like that

I like it.

That will give Edler his 15 years with the club and Gardiner can then settle into a 4 x6 to finish his career here.

The old bastard is learning. He said today the asking price for a Dman trade was too high and he did stand tall against Edler.

Brackett said today we will continue to find Dmen from college NCAA. Actually a very smart way. Cheap and they have maturity.

Friedman suggested that Canucks were in the running for Subban, as were TML and a mystery team.
Apparently all of those 3 teams wanted Nsh to retain salary and only the NJD were willing to take him on at full cost.
But beyond the salary, the cost of acquiring Subban was pretty minimal.
Fringe player, prospect and 2 x 2nd rounders.

I think we could have afforded Subban's salary, and this is not dissimilar to your suggestion of Gardiner for 3 years/8m, i think Subban would be 3 years/9m.

Plus Subban is a RHD.

You don't know that. These tier two free agents need to find a team that has the cap space and secondly wants to commit big money for many years. I don't think there are too many willing takers.

Break what rules ? signing Gardiner for two years is not breaking any rules.

Hey, if you think he’ll do it then more power to you. I would love to be wrong here but everything I’ve heard/seen from him suggests a straightforward GM.

Promising him a 2nd contract with exact terms is cap circumvention, otherwise why would the NHL have a rule against heavily frontloading contracts?

I have a feeling we are talking two different things. What is wrong with signing a two year deal?

fair enough.

Just saying if they didn't want to pull the trigger on Subban and his contract, it's unlikely that they'll offer that to Gardiner.

It is not front loading anything . There is no promised 2 nd contract. You are just telling him when Edler is gone we can look at another contract . That is not a promise.

My view:

a 2 year deal is fine, but Gardiner laughs at it.

The part you're suggesting about promising a 2nd contract is not technically legal in the NHL. Even if you think it is or if you think the NHL won;'t find out, I believe that Benning won't even think about it doing it in the first place.

Him learning how to sign players to more reasonable contracts and him learning how to be greasy are 2 very different things.

Subban brings a lot of attraction off the ice and his points are going downwards.

I think he'd prefer going for 6 or 7 years at 7M-7.5M, less stress about having to perform and get another contract. Plus he's secure in case of a a serious injury or sharp decline.

I think he'll get it from someone.
