I would draw the line at a 1st. If it took a 2nd + 3rd, then sure. If Tampa said no, then I wish them good luck at finding another GM who will play a 1st + 3rd for Miller knowing that Tampa needs to shed cap space. They I wait by the phone for the call back.

Career high is 53 pts. Basically a 40+ pt player for a 1st and 3rd. Ridiculous.

The one thing easier to swallow here is that he's actually a good offensive player unlike Sutter/Gudbranson. The cost is high, but at least the player should provide an actual boost to the team offensively.

If you go back through and look at the highest scoring players in drafts. You will probably find that 40+ player is generally 15-20 highest scoring players in drafts.

JT Miller is 13th in his draft in scoring. If you move from 20th spot to 15th in draft it would probably cost you a 3rd round pick.

it's apples to oranges when you evaluate player for picks trades using this logic.


The benefit of drafting/developing your own similar player is the cheap production you get before they get paid fair value on their 2nd or 3rd contracts. Plus you get more years of their prime. So even if both players turn out relatively equal, you benefit much more from the draft pick turning out than you do from trading for a player.

Yes he's a good player but man we are not in a position to trade 1st round picks.

1st round picks are biggest probably's than guys who are 40 plus point players. Unless you are getting a top 10 draft pick

He's usually good for 20+, he spent some time in the doghouse in Tampa, didn't get his usual ice time. Not a ringing endorsement, I know, but that's why Tampa was so dominant during the regular season. They had a player of Miller's caliber in their doghouse while Canuck fans were trying to get excited about Leivo/Pearson as potential 2nd line help for Horvat.
