please lets not over analyze this pick

end of the day, we will see what happens with his development. i'm surprised they want with a more power forward than speedy goal scorer, but they said they'd take best player available.

I think its bad when one of the first things said is 'I expected him to be drafted a lot lower"

And... ranked 22nd in US skaters

Think they went with a big and physically developed guy in hopes he's in lineup sooner than later?

Or grit boner?

I don't hate him, but seems like there were several better players and I they wanted to go the PF route Lavoie was there.

From Pronman at the Athletic...

Poulin, the 2017 second-overall pick in the QMJHL draft, was a good junior player the past two years and got better as the season went along and in the postseason. He’s a smart and competitive winger. He’s very intelligent, flashing high-end vision and tending to make good decisions with the puck. As the season went along he showed more consistent playmaking and overall dynamic elements. He’s got some soft skill, but he’s more of a distributor than an individual creator. He’s got very good hands in tight and scored several nifty goals. His shot is also good, and he can score with his wrist shot in tight. Poulin works hard, is strong on pucks, and wins his fair share of battles along the boards and in front of the net. He’s already quite strong, measuring in at over 200 pounds. His skating is OK. Some days he flashes a good top gear and other times I don’t think his pace is anything noteworthy.

based on some quick reading:
-stock rose primarily this past year
-was an animal in the playoffs
-big time work ethic and performer, some question how high his potential is
-should have a telling year in the QMJHL this season where he will have a large role with his team.

I dont hate, I dont love it. At the end of the day, drafting at 21 is a total crapshoot. Maybe it works, maybe it doesnt.

That may be his ceiling if he vastly improves his skating.

Here's what Jesse Marshall said on him, he had him at 26th overall:

So, in order of prominence, Poulin is:

- Really big, and uses his size well
- Needs to work on his foot speed
- Is a top 10 playmaker in this class (imo)
- Started to really find his offensive game as the year wore on
- Project? Yes. Potential high reward? Also yes.

The concern here for me would be is how long has he been skating and he is still relatively slow?

I mean look, all the names we wanted haven't been picked yet. That doesn't necessarily make us wrong or any other hockey writers wrong, but I guess we can take solace in the fact those guys are still available. I dunno lol
