The only problem with your scenario is that he isn't retiring. He is going on LTIR. Huge difference

"I don't think a year off or two years off is going to help it to be honest with you. From what the doctors have said and the way I feel, it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to come back."
- Ryan Callahan

Effectively the same thing.

The benefit to Callahan is 5.8M paid to him without the pounding on his body. I am not doubting his injury, I am saying the timing of the LTIR is odd. His discs did not just become diseased in the last few weeks.

Why would the NHLPA object? He is still getting paid

Callahan is a professional hockey player. His job and life is to play hockey. The guy wants a Stanley Cup like every hockey player. Players play through injury all of the time because that's what they love to do, play the game. If Callahan had an option to play hockey he would take it. That's why the NHLPA would object because their client is not being allowed to do what he loves and wants to do because the Lightning put him on LTIR.

The NHLPA cares about its members getting paid. That is it.

Not really...

What he was facing was a buyout, which would cost him 2 million in salary

Then he would hope to sign a contract for the vet minimum and actually have to play, and potentially have to go thru the indignity of waivers and/or the minors if it didn’t work out

This way he can take the easy full 6 million for doing nothing, rest a year, and if he has something to offer (or a contract offer) make a go of it next year

This guarantees him an extra 2 million. When it’s your last 2 million you might ever get, you take it

And you know this for a fact?

I think lots of teams would take Callahan and 2nd pick to help Tampa out. Non contenders with capspace like Ottawa, Rangers, Kings, Jackets. Cally had a 16 team trade list but if the option was trade/buy out them he would probably waive for any team (because of those 2 mill).

With only $10 million of projected 2019-20 cap space available and 17 players currently under contract, Callahan's $5.8 million cap hit is cumbersome. A buyout will result in a $3.2 million saving next season, and that's a start.

The New York native possesses a 16-team modified no-trade clause, therefore a trade to a club attempting to avoid the salary cap floor isn't out of the question. However, if Callahan isn't dealt, expect a buyout.

Buyout cap hit: 2019-20, $2.66M; 2020-21, $1.56M
