They have some young forwards already in Patrick, Konecny and Lindblom. They have Frost and Farabee coming. Who is the next young defenseman coming not already with the team?
- MJL

Subban isn't young tho. I don't see what you're getting at.

They still have a hole at 2C until/if Hayes signs and kids aren't going to fill that out of the gate.

Hopefully some of these bums jump ship and find a new team to root for.

Daryl Stanley is already on the top of my list for people you shouldn’t listen to because he seems to be fine with the deals makes. So I wouldn’t waste the potential Carpal tunnel syndrome typing to him.

However, arguing picks we should have gained is also a ridiculous argument, especially when you add those phantom picks to the actual picks we actually lost.

- SuperSchennBros

That’s right perfectly fine with the 2 dman moves. But hey improving the team should be secondary after all the success the flyers have had the last decade

I see low risk high reward ....

Count me mildly optimistic. I think the defense is better now. The defenseman we got back are not long term. We haven’t moved any of our young players yet.

I think a big move to better our offense is coming. If so then yes, I think this team becomes a cup contender. If not we are a playoff team that helps develop our younger players.

- youarewrong

I think we’re the same team as last season, with or with out Hayes and Niskanen. I agree that a big move could be coming but we don’t know if it is or what it is.

Defenseman under 25.
Morin
Myers
Sanheim
Hagg
Provorov
Friedman
Zemula

Morin
Myers
Sanheim
Hagg
Provorov

All on the roster and in the NHL with no way to protect them by sending them down...

And Friedman and Zemula could crack the league for a couple of games...yes, HUGE surplus...

You know they essentially have 1/8 of the cap locked into those two 32-yo-old dmen now right? (and AMacs BO)
- Tomahawk

Yeah...and?

The cost to the cap is mostly gone after one season and completely after two. That is what stop gaps are.

If you want veteran help and balanced pairings, it comes at a cost, right? I thought the idea was not to block the young players with long term aging player deals. These two are both 32, but are only here long enough for the young d to transition to bigger roles or become more confident and consistent.

I don't think these kind of moves happen unless they're planning a big move or two.

At this point the core is on coach#5, GM#3 & Owner#2 with minimal playoff success. If they want to make big roster changes at this point I'm not going to be up in arms over it. At least until I see what the return is.

More than trading for Subban. I don't think trading one D man guts the youth on defense whether it be for a forward or older defenseman.

Does this diminish the fact that they all still have around 10 years they can play in the NHL? Or do they all need to be gone by 30? I think by the time those players are getting ready to retire we will have a new crop of defenseman. This is just panic talking. Ffs our core defenseman are all under 25. And ghost is 26. We don’t need anyone coming in in the next 3-4 years and in that time we will have drafted and developed some.

It's not about one move. It's about the obvious mind set they have. Your reply is a narrow view. Are they going to think and act differently next year or the year after? Scott said they want the Flyers to be a Cap team. That combined with what Fletcher has done this off season to this point tells me if the Flyers have $100 bucks in their pocket, they're going to spend $100.
- MJL

Frankly, it is your view that is very narrow. Smart people make decisions based on the situation they are currently in and plan for those costs moving forward. To say that the approach can’t change from year to year based on need is incorrect.

Myers...not sure why people are penciling him the lineup. Schlemko will be waived, but that still leaves 7 defensemen guaranteed to be on the roster unless a trade takes place or Provorov holds out.

Well seeing how we haven’t won around since 2012 and have made the playoffs every other year, it’s kinda hard to have faith in making whatever Hypothetical next step you believe is coming.
- SuperSchennBros

Eh, I'm more of a cup half full kind of guy. While agree, I don't have faith in Fletcher or the team to take us to the promised land next year, as a sports fan I have hope. Faith comes after results, hope before.

On Gostisbehere...

At this point, after the Braun deal, I would put the chances of the Flyers NOT moving Ghost at about 30%...Three other teams are VERY much interested and the return could be tempting...Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto....

Fletcher traded away Brent Burns once and it was a massive loss. Don't think he'll repeat that mistake with Ghost

Provy-Niskanen
Sanheim-Braun
Ghost-Myers
Morin

Hagg traded

this is exactly what id like, this d corps is hands and feet better than any 6 blue liners weve ever employed since the days of Pronger and Carle.

Do they not also have 3 kids in Sweden who are thought of somewhat highly at least in terms of being an nhl dman?
