The Sabres are going to reel the rewards of other teams successes. That is the only way this low cap helps them.

They have been terrible at drafting, developing, spending and asset management.

Same thing goes for a team like Edmonton. Teams have to dump guys for pennies in the dollar because they can’t afford them.

If the Sabres are ever in that boat, people will see it differently.

- ImThatGuy

So you’re saying I’ll need glasses on a boat?

Good teams don't do this
- Slump Buster

Lol yes they do. They get all kinds of dead weight contracts. EVERY team has bad contracts.

So just be bad for the next how long until these “prospects” all turn out.

Year 9 of Eichel.

This team is so good, it should just stay the course. They have too much too end talent. I just can’t handle it.

- ImThatGuy

No not at all

You're taking this out of context

I never said don't make trades or spend money to improve the roster.

In fact there should be a lot of trades.

I am just against spending $10 million on a 2nd line center in Free Agency (after acquiring PK in our discussion)

This team needs more than a 2C and PK Subban to make this a good roster.

Make a Zucker like trade, a Kessel like trade.

But don't throw a $10 million per 7 year deal to Duchene on July 1st

Nonsense. If you draft well and (more importantly) don't take on bad contracts you might hit the cap. If you do you can turn assets into cheaper assets to keep the talent wheel moving. That's why Toronto isn't nearly in the bad spot that people think they are. At worst they trade some of their good pieces for good younger/cheaper pieces.
- Slump Buster

Toronto will have to trade 3-4 if it’s better players just to remain in the salary structure.

They are turning certain into uncertain.

Tampa is going to have to trade pieces to do the same.

Winnipeg has already started.

Las Vegas is next.

Then Pittsburgh.

St Louis (well they did, thanks j bottS)
Winnipeg
LA
Chicago

All have bad contracts off the top of my head.

There bad contracts and then there are devastating contracts. As long you don't do the latter you're ok.

This is all untrue. Toronto will have to move a player to get Marner in. So what? They are getting value back. Hell, they might simply turn Nylander into the D they need. Tampa will do similar stuff - they are rewarded for drafting well.

The Skinner trade was a success... Let's do it again
If Taylor Hall is available, would the Sabres take the risk?

Looking at Tampa for next off season and they are SCREWED

Cirelli
Joseph
Segachev
Cernak
Vasilevskiy

All will need new contracts

and that is before Point's new deal (and others this offseason)

I would depending on the cost of course

The Sabres basically got Skinner for free

I really doubt Hall would come that cheap

I would move a conditional 2nd that turns into a 1st if the Sabres makes the playoffs and or Hall re-signs in Buffalo plus a prospect and another draft pick but I doubt NJ says yes to that

I wish we were in that position. If when they have to trade players they will be trading good young players and getting back a fortune. They are set for years.

They did this by drafting well and by making good trades

Not by spending a crap ton of money in Free Agency

If the Sabres turn into Tampa by drafting and making really good trades I am all for it

They are loaded with talent and not a back crushing contract (Callahan is gone after this year)

The issue is, with the current NHL structure and how the GMs can’t help themselves. 99% of contracts signed at a players age of 28+ turn into bad contracts 3-4 years in.

There has to be ramifications on the players.

Less guarantees and more bonus incentive contracts.

This is a very basic and bad example but

You get 700k for every 10 goals you score and 250k for every 10 assists.

So a player with a guaranteed contract of only 4 mm scored 30/40 for 70 points you add another 3.1mm to their cap/ salary and it ends up at 7.1mm.

It’s radical and the cap would move a lot but it’s a better ideas than what they have now.

This is just them speculating right?

I wouldn't move Mitts for a year of Hall.

I would move Mitts for an extended Hall though.

You are assuming all of the unknowns you are getting back keep turning out and you lose 0 production.

The Players Union would have to sign off on that, and there isn't a chance in hell they agree to that.

They were so against the salary cap that there only way of compromise were guaranteed contracts.

Also no GM would want to try to work within a cap structure that fluctuates so much.

The NFL does it, just fine.

The NHL just has so many things wrong. It’s tiresome.

Comparing the NFL salary cap to the NHL salary cap and CBA are apples to oranges

There is no way that NHL players would be okay with non guaranteed deals

Even if that were true and they move 2 or 3 young guys and the new guys coming back they are left with a roster full of all-stars.

I would send them Tage Thompson or Scandella if that gets it done, he’s been a major disappointment.

It's risky for sure

I still think the way to improve this roster is the 2nd line and the 2nd pairing
