This is complete spitballin, but is it possible Gorton said hey I may offer sheet Laine/Conner and Chevy was like, what if I sold you low on Trouba? In an agreement to not offer sheet someone else? Maybe possible, but something seems odd to take such a crap return. Because in the press release Gorton said they talked for a few weeks about different players
They should call Tronna and do the same thing. Get Kapanen out of them😈 - Slimtj100
Your guess here is as good as any other. I just find it hard to understand why trade was made NOW. Jets got a soft return ---- if there really were "many" other teams interested, why not wait until draft night to see if Rangers or someone else would offer more. Yet he made trade tonite. Curious... |

Elliotte Friedman said on radio today before the Trouba trade that a lot of teams were in on Trouba and that the Jets were asking for a lot.
In a separate hit after the trade, he said multiple teams told him their package was better than what the Rangers gave up.

The mystery as to why Winnipeg sold low on Trouba, in addition to knowing that Trouba showed little to no desire to sign long term to remain in Winnipeg, could be due to the Jets now being willing to extend long term, some of their other key d'men among the following listed, some of whom were rumored to various extents of possibly being dealt as early as during this past season.
Tyler Myers - (UFA eligible & formerly at $5.5M in 2018/19)
Nathan Beaulieu - (RFA eligible & formerly at $2.4M in 2018/19)
Ben Chariot - (UFA eligible & formerly at $1.4M in 2018/19)
Joe Morrow - (RFA eligible & formerly at $1M in 2018/19)
Bogdan Kiselevich - (UFA eligible & formerly at $925K in 2018/19)
Dmitry Kulikov - (1 year left at $4.33M, then UFA eligible next summer)
Joshua Morrissey - (1 year left at $3.15M, then RFA eligible next summer)
Sami Niku - (1 year left at $775K, then RFA eligible next summer)
Add now Neal Pionk as an eligible RFA, after his $925K of 2018/19 expired.
Dustin Byfuglien at $7.6M annually, is the only Jets d'man who has at least two years remaining on his contract, which also expires at that time.
However, the question remains, despite if also having 100% certainty that Trouba wants to test free agency next summer, why the Jets still chose the Rangers offer, if other teams had offered a better return value (should those rumors be factual), in comparison to only the #20 overall pick plus Neal Pionk. |

We should target Meier now with SJS signing EK and being in some cap trouble. This has been a great offseason so far!

don't dismiss the college UFA's when the Rangers sign them, even if they don't do as well as advertised
Ryan Haggerty traded for Raanta
Pionk and Hayes traded for Trouba and Lemieux
Vesey about to be traded for something
free assets are always good |

That's a great way to look at their thinking when pursuing these college UFA's to give them a chance to prove themselves at a low cost.
That's especially so in this latest case with Pionk, who many fans in the end, became upset with him being over matched defensively, but only due to he being the one that Quinn in many instances, was forced to over use. That due a minor scale in part to some injuries to other defensemen, but more so, to others' poor play, in giving Pionk (and others) a chance, while also showcasing his offensive and skating skills to convince the Jets to make this trade and do so likewise.
Some FAKE trade it was, but only due to it being highway robbery for our benefit!

This lineup is pretty damn good if you think of the rebuild and how far along they are into it
Kreider - Zibanejad - Kakko
Panarin - Chytil - Buchnevich
Lemieux - Howden - Kravtsov
Vesey/Boo - Lias/Strome - Fast
Skjei - Trouba
Claesson - Deangelo
Hajek - Fox/Shattenkirk
Plus the prospects still in the system |

nobody was giving much credit to Pionk as very much of an asset at all, not here, not twitter, but you came in last week and talked him up big time, props to you on that |

I am definitely picturing both of them as a pairing
both of them have great size and are physical, maybe playing together will get the best out of both of them |

Haha thanks, he still has plenty of upside, with Fox, Deangelo and this chance for Trouba he'd be buried here |

Skjei is another guy fans have turned on quickly, he's going to be that first line LD unless something miraculous happens, I'm fine with that, I like Hajek but I don't think he has the same upside |

Brooks is at it again, but in this case, on our longtime "franchise" goalie in Hank.
https://nypost.com/2019/0...-lundqvist-trade-partner/
All makes sense here since the Sharks have yet to win a Cup with Martin Jones as their #1 goalie. That also includes other pluses in Hank's sister currently living in the Bay area, & his buddy in E. Karlsson guaranteed now to be there long term, to keep the Sharks still in a win now mode. Also, the Sharks would save an annual $1.5M in cap space for the next two seasons, if as Brooks suggests, the Rangers would pick up 50% of Hanks remaining two year contract ($8.5M annual cap hit), and should the Sharks also be able to trade Martin Jones elsewhere (5 years left at a $5.75M annual cap hit).
I guess Brooks also assumes that the team acquiring Jones would pick up his entire remaining cap hit for the next 5 seasons to relieve themselves of Jones' full cap hit, and then worry later about who their #1 starter would be in three seasons from now. |

You forgot Erixon being a centerpiece for the Nash trade or Talbot helping us get to the final and netting us a 2nd (that we blew). Your point is valid though, over the years we've done a stellar job getting these free assets |

Honestly, I would test trotting out Shatty on the left side. On the right we would still have ADA, Trouba, and Fox. I think a SHatty-ADA top pairing would be pretty solid. Metrics have those two as our best d men last year by a country mile. |

Think we got Erixon in a trade for a second rounder or something like that.
Another one is Girardi as an I drafted free agent. Obviously that one ended in a buyout but man what a career for an undrafted player.

Oh yeah, Erixon was Fox before Fox. I forgot about that. Let's hope that Fox is a little better pro than Erixon was. |

Speaking of Skjei, it's ironic that after that disastrous 2nd Round series loss to Ottawa two years ago, the Rangers and Jets thereafter & prior to the Draft, were in trade discussions then on a trade involving Trouba, who had refused to sign long term with Winnipeg.
The rumors then had the Jets seeking a young d'man with top potential for their left side, as a must in part in any trade for Trouba. That LD they sought was Skjei, who the Rangers did not want to part with. Their second piece wanted was a goalie who could compete for their #1 starter's role, or be a reliable backup in Antti Raanta.
There was some back and forth alternate talks prior to them ending for good on a deal involving Trouba, with the Rangers then dealing Raanta plus Stepan to the Coyotes, to make a certain member here very happy as far as Stepan leaving.
But shortly later, that same member became sad very quickly, after the Rangers had then signed Shatty on July 1st, instead of being able to acquire Trouba.
Most of us, including I were in the end, wrong on Shatty, to that member's delight through this day and likely beyond. (Sorry, Rangers9479!) |
