That means they defer it to next year, unprotected I believe? I still considered the Blues in pretty rough shape, but man oh man did they prove me wrong.

I believe your right. It's a moot point now but it would have been huge if they continued to suck. One of the bright spots of the first Phil Kessel trades is that GM's got smarter about trading first round picks willy nilly without protecting them if they end up as top 5 or 10. Except Ottawa of course, they still don't get it.

Trading for Mackinnon without giving up Werenski or Jones...lol...you'd likely have to offer both to just get talks started, and mostly just to get laughed at

Ottawa did the exact same thing St. Louis did. Traded away their first, made it top 10 protected the first year and unprotected if deferred. Ottawa deferred in 2018 to select Tkachuck, just sucked even worse this year.
