Wow. Sharks seem particularly hooped for salary cap now. What big salary is going to get moved out/not resigned? What about Stan trying to get Hertl? Big, skilled center. |

I really thought Trouba would have fetched more.
Let's remember though that Trouba has to sign in New York still. They weren't allowed to talk to him so it's a risk to give up a 1st and Poink.
However, they have a boatload of money and a big apple to toss at him. - Tyler Cameron

Tyler if I remember you once floated the idea of trading Cat And Strome to Edm for Drastl and someone else. Would that be enough to get Marner? |

No. |

I just noticed that the new Karlsson deal has an AAV of $11.5M - I thought $11M was too much but now come to find out it's actually even more by $500K per year. MERCY! |

Especially considering he just had to have his groin surgically repaired. |

Jumbo retires and Pavelski gets moved unless he takes one heck of a homer discount.
Pays for EK right there. |

Hmmm... that was not me.
... and I don't think I would trade Strome and DeBraincat for Marner. That doesn't really help Toronto and their salary cap issues for the future either.
I think Marner gets signed at the expense of a lot of guys - Kadri, Zaitsev, Marleau, Johnsson, Kapanen, Brown... all on that list of potential casualties. |

If I were the GM of the Leafs I would do everything in my power to re-sign Marner. Its Marner, not Tavares or Matthews that the Bruins focused on shutting down the last two playoff series. Marner is not only a very good playmaker and scorer but He's above average defensively. Aside from playing on the top line he's also on both the number one power play and the number one penalty killing units. He's also on the ice in the last minutes of closes games regardless of which team has the lead. I doubt ADB and Strome would interest the Leafs. |

It was a long shot that Chevy was going to trade Trouba to a division rival, however, Trouba is exactly what this team needs.
Guys like that don't become available very often. Once he signs a 7 year deal... he'll be unavailable for good.

His coach raved about what a great team player he is. Some people hear cockiness while others hear confidence in himself.

Take 10 young hockey players and 9 of them will be cocky in person. |

I just got a chuckle reading the latest Rangers blog. There was mention of moving out salary and Vesey was mentioned as a potential. I had this weird thought about the reaction here if somehow the Hawks signed K. Hayes and traded for J. Vesey in the same offseason... |

I am glad Kane was never arrogant when he was 18. Maybe the Hawks should have stayed away from him back in 2007. |

Just for debate/discussion.....not factoring in current organizational depth/prospects/roster. If you are starting a team and you have to choose between Scott Niedermayer or Mark Messier (Jonathan Toews or Duncan Keith). What's the more valuable player to build around, a #1 Defenseman or #1 Center.....??
EDIT: And I know that the Hawks keep saying "Best Player Available", but when looking at 2 different positions with the likely choices being Byram or Cozens/Turcotte/Dach....doesn't the Hawks' Hockey Ops valuation of #1 D vs #1 C to an organization come into play when determining who they define as "Best Player Available"?? - EnzoD
Yo Zo, I asked a few scouts I bother from time to time on the Twitter the same question. You take the #1 D or the #1C and they all said D. I'm in the Chunk camp, I think. A centerman covers every inch of all 3 zones and takes faceoffs. He can stop an attack in the Ozone and neutral zone better than a Dman can.
But the new age Dman is the trigger. Very very few have the poise, speed of thought, vision and or feet and skill to get the thing the hell out of the Dzone while under crazy pressure to not only relieve pressure but start an attack.
Tough call........... |
