Just for debate/discussion.....not factoring in current organizational depth/prospects/roster. If you are starting a team and you have to choose between Scott Niedermayer or Mark Messier (Jonathan Toews or Duncan Keith). What's the more valuable player to build around, a #1 Defenseman or #1 Center.....??


EDIT: And I know that the Hawks keep saying "Best Player Available", but when looking at 2 different positions with the likely choices being Byram or Cozens/Turcotte/Dach....doesn't the Hawks' Hockey Ops valuation of #1 D vs #1 C to an organization come into play when determining who they define as "Best Player Available"??

If I have to choose one, I'm going with the center. Having a true #1 center goes a long way to making you competitive and more balanced. There are examples both ways as far as playoff success. I just always go back to the Pitt/NSH Cup Final. Obviously, Pitt has two #1 centers, but NSH couldn't really sustain much pressure even with their glut of high end D-men.

Common SB we could have done better. I would have offered Beaudin or Boqvist. This now means Kakko is the #2 for sure. If we would have nabbed Trouba that could have forced the Rangers to grab Byram and Kakko would have fallen to us. Damn it Stan.

These are for the signing rights to Trouba. "Supposedly" Trouba's camp and the NYR have not had any discussions regarding contract.

Thought Winnipeg would have held out for more. They probably want to put the Trouba situation behind them so they can discuss contracts with Laine, Connor and Copp.

For those of you who like trades, trades and more trades, Sharks GM Doug Wilson and Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff each said today there's a LOT of chatter out there. Tons of teams with salary-cap space looking to taking advantage of that.

Now the Motta acquisition makes pefect sense, language caddy for Kakko.

I really thought Trouba would have fetched more.

Let's remember though that Trouba has to sign in New York still. They weren't allowed to talk to him so it's a risk to give up a 1st and Poink.

However, they have a boatload of money and a big apple to toss at him.
