They did
Maatta is slow and below average for the role we’re most likely to give him(3/4Dman)
Giving up Kahun to get him really makes it an overall awful move - SimpleJack
This board is unbelievable.
All of the female doging about how they need some size and grit - so the get a blue liner with some size (6’2” - 206, according to hockey-reference) who hits and blocks shots - and the female doging starts about his speed.
I have no idea if Maatta will produce what the Hawks think / hope, but I do think that Kahun is a nice - but replaceable (very possibly by skaters already in the system) - bottom-6 winger. |

Hearing Hawks might still add another defenceman.
Forsling, Murphy and/or (maybe) Gustafsson are being discussed as being moved out of Chicago.
Told you all to buckle up. - Tyler Cameron

Ok LBR... I respect your analytics, so hopefully as you say this is a roll of the dice to get a top-4 dman on the cheap - but I’m not overly optimistic at the potential of this working out that way. I hope I’m wrong... - Chief4Feathers
I really like Kahun and think there is a decent amount of risk with Maatta, but my initial reaction was more "I don't know how to feel" than outright disgust, like with say Danault or Scuderi trades or signing Manning. I'll try to be somewhat positive until I can see Maatta play for the Hawks. |

Clever, no.
Appropriate as a response to someone who never posts until chiming in to passionately defend Stan’s decision to make a poopty trade for a 3rd rate, lead footed D-man? Absolutely. - Ogilthorpe2
No I totally get it...the valid points your making on how slow he is, I mean it makes sense now....we gave up kahun (which don’t get me wrong I like as a guy that’s not gonna make much mistakes and is pretty responsible in his own end and that can put a few goals on the score sheet). But right now maatta is more valuable to the hawks than kahun, who can be replaced by a few players on the roster right now. But your right, maatta is horrendous because he’s on the slower side |

For the record I’ve never once complained about needing more size/grit. Maybe others but not me. |

Maybe he’ll turn out to be Sopel-esque... glacially slow but blocks shots like there’s no tomorrow?... but, that $4M cap hit is hard to swallow unless he truly establishes himself as a top-4 defenseman.
Stan has earned at least a wait-and-see given some the trades he’s made this past season. |

It’s trades like this that make me nervous for the Draft. They’ll probably draft some dwarf Swede that no one has ever heard of with the 3rd overall pick. |

I’m not overly concerned about losing Kahun or the 5th rd pick, but what I am concerned about is tacking on a $4M cap hit with Maatta - who may not even prove to be worthy of top 4 pairing... and he has a NMC that kicks in next year? |
|
|
|
Regardless what you think of the player exchange part of the trade - one aspect I find positive is that the trading partner was the same ole Arizona/Carolina/Columbus - at least Stan introduced himself to someone new. |

And if he does I can't wait for the responses, especially yours and a few others. I might have to get some of those senior diapers when I sit down to read this blog. |

It's not a NMC - it's a modified NTC - which is significant because an NMC would make him ineligible for the Seattle expansion draft whereas a NTC allows him to be eligible so the Hawks don't have to protect him if they don't want to. |

Well there maybe a couple of silver linings in the deal.
1) if Marta doesn’t work out, we can buy him out and his cap hit would less then a mil a year x 4 years
2) there is still a physical that needs to be done in order for the deal to be completed. If Maata is t healthy then the deal should be canceled. |

So is the PK better?
is there a better shot blocker.
Did they dad good stick guy, Stanley Cup winner?
That should be where analysis starts - wiz1901
One guy isn't going to instantly make the PK better. He should help, though. Stanley Cup winner is irrelevant in this case. Hawks have enough of those.
Great. He blocks shots and that has some merit. Or it could be he is spending a lot of time in his own zone. We will see. He needs a good stick because he is slow and not exactly physical.
My opinion is he doesn't make them better. And probably doesn't make them worse. |

Ok, thanks for the clarification. So he CAN be expansion draft exposed - which is good.
But, I still reserve the right to be overly critical of this trade until proven otherwise... |

Maatta is far from a guy who hits and has grit. He blocks shots for sure(too slow to get out of the way) but he is not "physical" in that sense.
His speed is an issue, Seriously, Rozy was faster. |

Which would be fine if that was the role they acquired him to play. They didn't. He is expected to slot into the top 4 here. |

Which imo he’ll do just fine in....and no he’s not known for his physicality but he does use his body well to clear the crease in which we are lacking in that area. He plays well positionally in his own end and uses his stick well. Which I think makes up for his lack of speed. Could stan have gotten someone better? 100% he could of....but for what we gave up, Stan did pretty good on this trade |

I also believe the Hawks have the option to nullify any NMC or NTC clause.
