Why does everybody think this? He has enough cap to get all his players signed. The only thing he needs is some space in the cap for the season to cover injury replacements etc.

Flames have about $15 million of cap space ?

Tkachuck $8-9million
Bennett $3-4 million
Mang $800k
2 Goalies $6-8 million
2 Forwards $1-2 million

Really rough numbers but Calgary has around $15 million in Cap space and $20 million of players they need to sign. They need at least an additional $5 million but likely more of cap space.

Doubt Tre signs Chucky for over $8.0mill & Benny I can see coming in the $3.0-3.5, Mangy $800K & the goalies I cant see exceeding $6.0 mill. Rittch will be in at 3.0 max & whoever the 1B/backup is going to be less. We will have 12 signed forwards after these signings & Dube easily can be the 13th. Wouldnt take much to tweak things to get compliant. A Stone buyout gets you half way there & if Tre can land him somewhere, that 3.5mill may be all you need if he can grind cheaper deals on the above. If Hathaway is looking for over a mill, we may not be able to keep him as I see some team signing him for more.

I think Treliving needs to trade Brodie, yes he plays like a river boat gambler and sometimes he gets burned. When he is on he is on, I think the Flames need to make room for the young D they have pressing for playing time.

It should be interesting what Treliving does leading up to the draft, maybe Brodie and a prospect or pick will get Johnsson or Kapanen out of Toronto.

I think Flames should forget about trading for a back up, sign Rittich and go with Gillies as the tandem. If if doesn't work we can pick up a goalie through the waiver wire.

Those #'s are pretty high end of the scale. Websites that predict what players are going to get have Chucky at $7.8mil and with Tre's ability at signing his own FA's i can see it. What goalies are costing us $6-8 mil?
I just dont believe there is this massive panic and rush to make a bad trade. Heck, Stone can be sent to Stockton. That savings would cover Mangiapane.

Todd, Because you handle the Devs too, do you see Brodie as a stopgap (for lack of a better saying) until they see how Smitty handles playing in the NHL? He has one year left, is a lefty playing the right side. Looks like hes being pushed out by the youngsters. Is there a fit or is it just trying to force things? If so what kind of return do you see from NJ?

I made one of those teams on cap friendly to see where were at https://www.capfriendly.c.../armchair-gm/edit/1226745

If we sign Bennett to 4 mill, Rittich to a 2mill bridge and Tkachuk gets 8 million we would be able to spend ~5.5 million on a starting goaltender (plus cap to spare on depth options e.g. Hathaway).

*Assuming Frolik and Brodie are both dealt.

I used that 5.5 million to sign Varlamov to a 3 year deal. If he doesn't pan out he (and Neal) could be exposed in the upcoming expansion draft.

Also, that was without buying out Stone--he was placed in the AHL to add another ~800 k in cap relief.

Lack
Hiller
Ramo
Johnson
Ortio
Berra

How many more project goalies do we need to go through before we learn our lesson? Most of the names I'm hearing wouldn't be an upgrade on the guys I just listed, let alone an upgrade on the goaltending Smith & Rittich provided for us last season.

Stay away from:
Mrazek
Lehner (let someone else take the risk on him--too many red flags for my liking)
Talbot
Khudobin
Halak
Ward
Bernier
Hutchison

Varlamov over the last five years: https://www.hockey-refere...-sum:stats_basic_plus_nhl

238 gp .914 SV% 2.79 GAA .524 Quality Start %

Bobrovsky over last five years: https://www.hockey-refere...-sum:stats_basic_plus_nhl

278 gp .919 SV% 2.46 GAA .560 QS %

Considering Varlamov had to play multiple years behind one of the worst NHL teams to ever hit the ice I'd say his numbers are pretty damn good when compared to who most believe to be the 2nd best goalie in the league.
