Remember when Niedermayer left NJ to sign with Anaheim? He played 5 years in Anaheim...was an all-star 5 times, 2nd in Norris voting 2 times, oh and also won a Cup and Conn Smythe with his new team. Pretty big impact. Guess who else signed with Anaheim that summer - Teemu Selanne who routinely put up 40+ goals and 90+ points.

But you think Matt Duchene belongs in the same sentence as these guys?

Take a look at what Dallas did in the 1990's...added Nieuwendyk and Belfour who delivered the Cup. Nieuwendyk won the Conn Smythe and Belfour had incredible stats and was considered one of the best goalies of that era.

Others have obviously mentioned Chara and Hossa.

Stamkos was never a UFA, he went to the tampering period, but signed an 8 year deal, something no UFA can do.

It's a cautionary tale for sure. Not enough pucks to go around on that team and Kariya was injured for a big chunk of the season. Selanne followed up his 16-16-32 season with the Avs with 40-50-90 and 48-46-94 the two post lockout years with the Ducks. Kariya went 11-25-36 with the Avs and then 31-54-85 post lockout with Nashville.

Those of you using facts to make a logical argument are wasting your time here. The only things that matter on this blog are gumdrops, unicorns, JT's opinion and how many comments he can get by making ridiculous statements.

Nieuwendyk couldn't agree with the Flames on a contract extension. Went to arbitration, was awarded a 1-year deal, but he wanted to re-negotiate a longer term extension. The Flames low-balled him so he refused to report for the 1995 season as a hold-out. Eventually the Flames found a team - Dallas - willing to meet his salary demands. They traded him and he was immediately signed to a 5-year extension at almost double the salary that the Flames had tabled.

So yeah technically a trade rather than free agent signing. But certainly not your typical hockey trade. This was the Stars opening the bank much like a UFA signing.

Queue the "This guy's a Billionaire, So he's gonna spend spend spend and doesn't care about losing money"
