Training camp for football was always the worse f'n thing in the world for me. I have a sweating disorder where even after my body has cooled itself that it doesn't tell my body to stop sweating. So in one August practice, I would lose 8-11 lbs of water weight. That was at 325 lbs. Now at 255 lbs it is a lot better but I'd still die in the heat all day.

Why are we always living in the past here. Find me one person who was demanding Leon over Sam. Sam's a good player and there's no debate. Who gives a damn if Leon is better. So be it. When the Sabres are able to send a scout, or even an idiot, into the future to scout out draft classes from years past to make sure they pick the best player.

It's not, nor will ever be, an exact science. All teams have busts to their names, Michael Dal Colle STILL doesn't play for the Islanders, and Ehlers is a pretty great player. Bennett is a 3rd line checking forward. It is what it is.

- TheSabresTaco

I care, that's why I took the time to post it.

I'm not acting like we should have taken pastenek .

The professional scouts and gms obviously has leon ranked close. He went 1 pick later.

Sam's a good player - big deal .
2oa's are generally better then good.

Rather funny nugget I just found.

Ristolainen had as many points this season as Mark Pysyk has had in 3 seasons combined since we traded him.

But this was a dozen years ago for Pommerā€¦

I don't think it applies today, Samson is far superior in almost every way from Jason. And that's no slight on Pommer, the guy is old now.

And I think you're discounting that Pommer was much older when he got those totals. What Sam's ceiling is, I think, is unreached. 65pts out of a 21 year old is pretty darn good. Who will have the better career? Still undecided.

- RhinoFan

Good post

Sam is super important in the Sabres success.

Pommer may have played his last nhl game

I have some sneaking suspicion that Pommer will get 1 more year. Haven't been following too much though.

I've read articles talking about Samson's next contract and were using other current players as possible trajectories for him. The ones they used was a better version of James Neal but slightly less than Loui Eriksson in Dallas in his prime days.

So that means 25-33 goals and somewhere between 25-45 assists a season. Samson dropped 65 points this season and the highest single season output by either of them was Neal at 81 in Pitt and 73 by Eriksson.

I'd like to think that Sam is slightly better on D than either of them but none of them are exactly touted as well rounded or 2 way players. Just clearly not liabilities.

I'm certainly not opposed to it but we have one guy underachieving on the RW already. I think it will depend on where they want guys like Olofsson and Smith to play next year. If they sign a top 6 winger.

Worst (realistic) case scenario

UFA - Jack - Sam
Olofsson - Mitts - Okposo
Sheary - Evan - Pommer/Nylander/Tage/Smith

Best (realistic) case scenario:

Skinner - Jack - Sam
Olofsson - UFA - UFA
Sheary/UFA/Evan - Mitts - KO/Nylander/Tage/Smith

Both Neal and Eriksson played in the cheaper era in their primes where they were paid between 4.25M-6M AAV but with inflation if I remember right it was like a 6.25-7M AAV IF he had another 65+ point season and jumps over 75 pts next season.

Depends if they went with a big 6-7 year deal or with a 4-5 year deal as well. There was also some crazy thing like a NMC is worth 500K AAV and NTC is worth 850K AAV.

It got really confusing in the actual prediction part lol.

Well I do not pay for The Athletic to see the trade scenarios but at least to me... those bolded guys is not a "best case" anything.

I think that Kapenen is so incredibly overrated it's not even funny. I mean... Okposo's first 2 years in Buffalo he put up better numbers than Kapenen's "break out year" this season with JT, Marner, and Matthews on his lines. Gimme a break. And KO put up better numbers in FEWER games too on the worst place team in the NHL.

Gardiner on the 2nd pairing instead of Risto and McCabe... don't even get me started there.

Would anyone object to Wayne Simmonds
- SABRES 89

Yeah unfortunately his age leads me to believe that heā€™ll end up like Lucic sooner rather than later and this team doesnā€™t need another anchor contract.

I think we both realize that they are at completely different stages of their careers last season.

Pommer s 2nd and third full year in the nhl
34 goals 34 assists
27 goals 53 assists

Sam 2nd and 3rd years in the nhl

17 goals 30 assists
25 goals 25 assists

See the difference. Aside from one guy being a gem of a find in the 2nd round vs. 2nd oa

- Boss34

Game was different in 06/07 and 07/08. Such a shame too. The NHL had something those first few years after the 04/05 lockout.

As long as he is signed with hte idea of him being a short 1 or 2 year deal on 3rd line. Like a Vanek type offering. Possibly just to trade him at the deadline even. He doesn't have much left in that body that is only like 30?
- JVince11

Iā€™d sign Vanek yesterday if I could.

Is he older? Yep
Is he slow? Yep

Does he still put up points with very limited mins? Yep
Does he want to sign with Buffalo? Yep, going on 4 yrs now.
Can he still pot 17-22 goals? Yep and we need goals
Is he cheap? Yep, $2.5 mil will do it.
Does he still have gas in the tank? Yep and Iā€™ll say it, I predict Vanek will hit the 1000 mark before itā€™s all said and done.
