Feels as if this should be a wait and see season (not greatest idea for Benning) but it might surprise in what Van has already in the prospect pipeline.
Van doesn't really know what they have in OJ, Lind, Gadjovich, Madden, Rathbone.
Quite a few prospects just finished first year of AHL and College. This season will be a more defining season for them. I wish to not lose one before we know what they might become.
They need to sign a few players on the defensive side. Or make a trade.

Mock drafts from the 3 NHL.com people.
20. New York Rangers (from Winnipeg Jets)
Kimelman -- Lavoie: After a good regular season, Lavoie turned it on in the playoffs, leading the QMJHL playoffs with 20 goals in 23 games, and then scored two goals in four games to help Halifax reach the Memorial Cup final. His mix of size and scoring touch makes him appealing, and the consistency should come with maturity.
Morreale -- Seider: A two-way defenseman with a sound positional game who is at his best in the defensive zone. Seider uses his size and strength to his advantage and plays with confidence.
Lepage -- Soderstrom: The Rangers have accumulated prospects at a number of positions during their rebuilding effort and would do well by adding another in Soderstrom. He excelled playing with and against men in the Swedish Hockey League this season, and although he may not be as offensive as his contemporaries, he is very reliable on defense.
If the draft was to fall the way of Seider or Soderstrom still being available at pick 20. I would suggest a draft down scenario twice, off to 15th with Montreal. If they are still both available a possible trade down again with the New York Rangers. Moving down 5 spots each time. Both MTL and NYR have two second round picks.
Draft one of Seider or Soderstrom at 20th or someone else. Use the 2- two picks to get back into the 1st round again or pick 2 more times in the 2nd round.

3 years ago it was talked about as a strength and nothing was really done. Now it's a weakness and nothing will still be done. - manvanfan
This is what blows my mind. Though I think “something” will be done. Fixed? Certainly not this off season. |

How exactly are they supposed to know it’d fall that way ? Both should still be available when we pick at 10 and both will probably be gone by 15. If Benning trades back assuming one or both of these guys make it to 15 or beyond he’s 🦇💩.
At this point I want neither BTW. BPA @ 10 please. Get creative & acquire more picks if possible, but not by moving 10. |

For me, the fixing was done at the trade deadline trading away Gudbranson and if it is valid that DP is being let go. That's two players probably the worst two defenders on the team. As long as they aren't replaced with worse defenders. The defence will be better.
Capable defenders that can stay healthy is what Van needs now. Not some high scoring defensively inept defensemen like karlsson, Gardiner, Myers. For price and term of these players right now. Better to draft another defender in the 1st or 2nd round. One that's closer to NHL ready maybe a higher floor but lower ceiling. |

OJ while still an adventure should be called up some time this year. Woo might be ready after next year . I don't really want to get tied down with some long term contract.
Gardiner will sign if Edler walks
I think Sautner can hold the fort on third pairing this year . It may not be beautiful but it will get better.

That's a chance you take.
I'd want neither at 10 also. If someone is taking them before 15 or 20th than most likely a better player is going to drop to Van and you will then get a player that you have ranked higher than 20th plus picked up other assets.
Think like 2015 draft where you could walk away with a Boeser at 23. In the 2nd round pick up a Brandon Carlo, Vince Dunn and Christina Fischer or Erik Cernak, Roope Hintz and Rasmus Andersson. OR some players that will never make the NHL.
Unless someone falls, I don't see a point of staying where you are.
Personally I don't see a big difference between my 10th player Zegras and my 18, 19, 20 picks of Bobby Brink, Philip Tomasino, and Thomas Bjornfot. |

I'd prefer not to get tied to any long term contracts either.

I think there are some really underrated D that will be found in later rounds. Talk about Ryan Johnson who teams are trying to figure out if he is a 1st round pick or not. |

Yet oddly enough, most scouts/pundits have Broberg between 10 and 14......if he dropped to 21, I'll give your father-inlaw a handy..... |

I'm fully on board with this.
Frighteningly tho, his stock is rising fast and the belief is that he has top pairing potential/poor man's #1. He can skate, pass, has some offensive flair....
Where I struggle is that he's a bit of a project. None of those attributes are currently NHL level and may never be.
Take the forward....I won't budge on Boldy but if Zegras or Newhook were taken, it'd be hard to to pull me away from the bathroom as I'll be snorting line after line of coke, jerking it until it fell off..... |

Because you are upset with the selection or like it a lot? I’m not sure how coke driven masturbation binges start. |

It's all about perception. Consolidated rankings for May from Canucks army has him around the 15th mark and between the drafts. Someone has him as high as 8th and someone has him as low as 33rd.
Three things are for certain about Philip Broberg. He can skate, he can shoot, he's big and plays physical.
Things that people are uncertain on, can he defend at an NHL level worthy of a 1st round pick. Does he have any hockey IQ or is he just getting by from his skating and size.
I would take him because even if he isn't an awesome defender, he can still skate, shoot and play physical. It's worth being taken, just how high you want to take that. |
