If they lose Gardiner, Hainsey and Zaitsev.. It will be hard.. I think they need to add 2 defensemen at the very least via trade/FA

Rielly - someone
Muzzin - someone
Rosen - Liljegren
Sandin

- PatC80

Dermott isn't out literally indefinitely

Based upon the one Marlies game I watched this year in the semi-finals, Sandin is not ready for prime time yet.

Guy's a giveaway machine.

- Atomic Wedgie

I agree he is not ready yet, definitely could use at least one more year in the AHL.

But are you really basing your opinion after watching him in one game? I watched many Marlies games this year and he was far from a giveaway machine. He was already arguably their best defenseman in all aspects of the game.

Luke Schenn might be the only righty UFA they can afford.

Tim Heed will be dubas' blockbuster signing to help the defense.

Yes of course. With their cap situation they will have to, and they will make them to get salary off the books, so they won't be trades that improve the team. Unless Dubas is entering executive of the decade territory. They need 3 d, and are already over budget on the d by 4 million assuming they sign their RFAs. Even if they sign for less, let's say 5 million less than market combined, now the d has one million to add 3 guys. That means bringing up one guy from the minors is all they could do. So trade away forwards. Okay, so they trade Nylander and gain 2 million in space let's say. Now they need 2 more GOOD d men with 3 million more dollars and Nylander is replaced by a plug. Very difficult circumstances to improve at all.

As per the Faulk extension, wouldn't adding 2 more million in salary make that all the more difficult?
- aminnes

Eh. They've got lots of space and the only big contracts coming up would be Aho and Svechnikov.

Lots of guys ready to make the jump from the Checkers too. Biggest concern is adding more firepower up front and stabilizing the goaltending.

Interesting that they have a specific budget for defensemen.

They don't, it's based on what they are paying the forwards.

It's public knowledge. Anyone can look up what their cap situation is.

They have 8 mill next year plus the so called 3.5 its going up and Tim Hortons LTIR.
Plus Dermott and Hyman will be out at least the first month, more cap relief.
It's not as bad as everyone thinks.

How do they have 8 million next year? Are you saying before they sign MM, Kap and Jon?

Yes, if they cant't sign those 3 guys for under seventeen then trade them.
I also think Zaitsev and Brown will be gone.

Which would mean trading for less salary or prospects and picks. They aren't getting better players for less than what these guys are worth. Hence, regression.

Why can't they get equal Value?
I also think Brown will be traded and Zaitsev, another 7 mill.
I think they will only get picks.

There is an article in the montreal gazette on the habs signing marner to an offer sheet.

Do they not realize marner would have to sign it? That would put him at risk of playing for the habs. Why on earth would he do that?

He'd become the most unpopular player in Maple Leafs history. Sounds dubious.
