Hard to call them cheap given that, between the two of them, they'll likely be raking in around 8 to 9 million a year.
As for the Oilers' past being beset by hiring the "experienced" guys, that's not fully true. Since the 2004-05 lockout, the Oilers have employed the following people as GM and coach:
Kevin Lowe- was his first time as a GM, had been GM since 2000
Steve Tambellini- first time as GM
Craig MacTavish- first time as GM
Peter Chiarelli- experienced candidate
Craig MacTavish- was his first NHL coaching gig, had been coach since 2000
Pat Quinn- experienced candidate
Tom Renney- experienced candidate
Ralph Krueger- first time as coach
Dallas Eakins- first time as coach
Todd McLellan- experienced coach
Ken Hitchcock- experienced coach
While their decisions in coaching certainly support your assertion that they rely too much on "experience", their choices in GM have historically not been. Excluding Petus, the rest were new to the job.
I fully agree that they should've gone full new blood (Pat Verbeek as GM and Todd Nelson as coach), but to say they "have failed by constantly turning to recycled failures" isn't entirely true. They've failed when they've recycled failures, but they've also failed when they've gone the opposite way. They always fail. That doesn't mean they should stop trying to innovate like they have, but the evidence doesn't reinforce either path.
The issue has been their insular, organizational old boys club mentality that has promoted undeserving candidates from within and allowed these candidates to run roughshod over the evaluative and development departments. One needs only look at how many (read: few) ex-Oilers executives are even in conversations as candidates of interest for other teams to see how bad it's been.
The pushback you'll get on this point is likely going to be because, despite his flaws, Holland has taken the first visible steps to breaking that established nepotistic hierarchy with the firings of MacTavish and Sutter (so far). As sad as it may be, if all Holland manages to achieve is to break that cycle, that'll be more than any GM since Sather. |

Typically I find Tanners Oilers blogs so terrible and ridiculous I regret reading then.
This one starts stupid but unfortunately ends up with a valid, if exaggerated, point. The team is going in a stale and proven to fail, direction.
I can't believe I am agreeing with Tanner. I hope that means we are both very wrong. |

Not sure why Holland is considered stale and proven to fail. From the first minute on the job he said he's not attached to anyone in Edmonton. First day he tells Hitchcock to beat it, then MacT, then Sutter. This purge was desperately needed. A rookie GM likely doesn't act so bold. He adds Nygard for free, he's already stated he won't rush prospects anymore, he's apparently talking to Datsyuk to fill a 3C role and mentor these guys. That would be a nice addition. I'm sure he's busy exploring how to shed some cap space too. Once Illitch died and the rebuild was on he got quite a haul for Smith and Tatar. Heck he even schooled Chayka in Arizona by trading Chychrun for Cholowski and Hronek. 2 for 1. Hronek looks like a stud. |

Cought a break by drafting mcdavid ? Really!! That’s a no brainer should never have been in the position to get him in the first place! Not sure if anybody Hurd Burke’s take on the draft but basicly said no team should be able to draft top 3 year after year after year!! Stop rewarding a franchise for horrible decisions making and bad scouts. - pzoxic
What a scoop! You "Hurd" this hot take here first, people! |

Step back from the ledge. Everyone wanted yzerman and mccrimmon and they are 54-55 or so. We are talking about 6 years or so older that tippet or holland are. Are we to believe they dont know hockey cause they have been management for 25-30 years. Time to get over trades made 3 years ago by diff management. Hall is more injured than he plays and eberle is ufa. Do you really want hall long term approaching 30 with injury issues in another year. |

So basically Tanner's point is NHL teams are stupid for recycling the same people over and over.
Like after Trotz was a FAILURE in Nashville, it was really stupid for the Caps to "recycle" him and win a Cup. Should have just found a millennial coach from the NCAA instead.
Blues hired Armstrong who failed in his previous GM life. Also hired Berube as coach who had already failed in Philly.
Boston seems pretty happy with Bruce Cassidy who was previously fired in Washington. Stupid recycling.
Also love how the Oilers should have found their own Shanahan. Hmm, what did Shanny do? Hired Lou. That was smart. But then when NYI added Lou, well, just another example of stupid NHL teams recycling. - uofcguy
Imagine how humiliated his kids will be when they see the abomination of delusional mental illness that is his digital footprint. |

The Oilers didn't get value for Hall, but trading for Larsson was the right move at the time and the Oilers would have been perennial contenders if every other move they had made hadn't been complete garbage. 23 year old top pairing defenceman are impossible to acquire and filled a glaring need for the Oilers. The Hall trade can't be the worst trade ever when the Eberle for Strome trade was so much worse. |

I actually agree with you.
It can still work, but only if the talent outweighs the coach's ability to make mistakes. |
