I just see the money being better-spent elsewhere at that point in his career.

I wonder if Lou can pry one of these bottom-six guys out of St. Louis. Binnington is going to need a new deal this summer as well as Edmundson, plus RFA's: Blais, Sundqvist, Barbashev. Probably better places to try and steal guys from but those RFA's have all been very impressive in the playoffs.

Casey and Nelly were arguably our best 2-way players this season. I ‘d be inclined to wait until closer to when Casey ‘s contract is up before trying to decide on his future with the team.

Meh, I know a guy who has beers with MM and Casey, so (frank) off

Does he captain a boat and frequent playgrounds too? If so I may know him

That's a good deal it's front loaded so hes movable later if need be. Staple posted all the available centers and outside of duchene there really wasnt an upgrade and Nelson found himself this year I believe. Amazing what a coaches vote of confidence can do for a player

Am I the only Islander Fan not happy with this signing?javascript:emoticon('')
- Nfdbulldawg

I'm sure there are some others. You're entitled to your opinion, but I'll ask these two questions:

- Who else would you have signed?

and

- For how much?

It's a lot shot Duchene signs here, they can't bank on that and then get left holding their Richards when Nelson takes more money somewhere else.

Well yeah I don't mean they have to make the final decision now, but my point is just that grinding players bodies break down...it's happening with Simmonds, Neal, Hornqvist and Casey will likely end up in a similar spot. I'm not rooting against the guy, I just think it's the reality.

Casey playing his style and at his size will make him break down even more. We have seen the missed games increase. Casey is a very likeable player and person but injuries are a concern.

Yeah I think at that point it's not going to be worth giving him a raise. Sure, if he's largely healthy between now and then and he keeps replicating his 20g season then by all means, let's bring him back. I just think that's probably not going to be the case.

Interesting

With the #Islanders electing not to pay out any of Nelson's new contract in the form of a Signing Bonus, his camp instead took advantage of the 35% variance rule (max permitted in adjacent years for front loaded contracts) in both 2020-21 & 2022-23, the potential lockout seasons.

Can someone explain this rule to me?

It took me some poking around to figure out exactly what it meant.

So you (may?) know that the NHL outlawed the front-loaded contracts. If you don't, the short version is that teams would add extra years to players deal's that had very little salary (Hossa/Kovalchuk were two glaring examples). So stretching out the term of the contract helped lower the annual average value (AAV = cap hit). This made it easier for teams to lock guys up for the rest of their career and let them retire when, in reality, they'd only be losing out on the last year or two of their contract when their actual salary was next to nothing.

So the actual salary for a $50M 10 year deal for a player could look like:

Year 1: $10M
Year 2: $9M
Year 3: $8M
Year 4: $7M
Year 5: $6M
Year 6: $5M
Year 7: $2.5M
Year 8: $1.5M
Year 9: $500k
Year 10: $500k

And the player could just retire in the last year or two of the deal and not be missing much PLUS the team lowers the AAV by adding those last two years at essentially nothing.

So, that rule you asked about is essentially saying that in adjacent years (ie: Years 1 and 2, or 2 and 3, or 3 and 4, etc...) the players actual salary can only deviate 35% from what it was in the first year.

So with Nelson's deal:

Year 1: 8M
Year 2: $5.2M ($8M x .35=$2.8M and $8M-$2.8M = $5.2M)

Year 3: $8M
Year 4: $5.2M (same math as above)

Year 5: $5.6M
Year 6: $4M (this doesn't utilize the entire 35% deviation rule)

Years 1 and 2 are adjacent, same with 3 and 4, and so on

What's notable (and concerning as a hockey fan) is that the two years that they kept Nelson's salary at the maximum 35% deviation from the year prior are the two years that teams are planning for a potential lockout. The Islanders are keeping what they have to actually pay low so they can deal with the potential for no revenue

Simply put, they are paying him more during the years where they "know" there will not be a lock out to guarantee him more money.

If it we 36 mil split over 6 years evenly it would break down to $73,170.73 per game.

next season he is making 8 mill which is $97,560.97 per game.

so if there is a lock or work stoppage and they miss games he wont lose as much money.

Except the years where he is actually making less are the years that teams are worried about potential work stoppages. The team did it to hedge against them having to pay players despite not having any revenue.

That was to help the team, not the player...although it doesn't hurt the player at all since he gets a huge paycheck in years 1 and 3.

the players dont get paid during lockouts or work stoppages.
if they did they would have less of an incentive to resolve them.

CapFriendly just clarified for me, yeah I was wrong.

It's so he'll lose less money if there's no hockey. Whoops.
