not just for anything.
send him to the Jets for Trouba as part of the deal .. - dmnted
I hear his weakness is getting the puck up to his forwards. With the forward group we have we need the puck in their hands quickly. |

Trouba is overrated. - Steven_Seagull
2nd in ice time on the Jets. RHD. Same age as Rielly. Kills penalties. 112 hits. 172 blocks. 50 points.
Where exactly is the problem? |

42 assists. Can't be that bad at it.
More than twice as many as Nylander, by the way. |

Vastly overrated. Gonna want big $$$$ on his next deal. And by all accounts, wants to play in the US.
Soo... strike three you're (Trouba) out? |

I by no means think he’s bad, would love him with Muzzin on the 2nd pair. Just not at the expense of Nylander. Kapanen+
In terms of points, this year is an outlier. He was averaging 32 points/82 games in his first 5 seasons. For a guy not known for being an elite defensive d-man, that’s fine, nothing special. Goal scoring was up league wide, which is why I’m not counting on Rielly hitting 70+ points again next year. Maybe Rielly does, maybe Trouba hits 50 again. Who knows?
My biggest concern is that he has played in 66 or more games just twice in 6 years. You really want to trade a first line winger for a health risk that will surely be overpaid this off-season? |

So was Rielly.
Nylander didn't play like a 1st liner last year. Trouba did play like a top pairing though. |

If he gets the same as Nylander, that's not a problem.
Matthews is American.
Maybe he just doesn't like Winnipeg. |

Ah, I see. So you ignored the rest of the paragraph. Nice debate. gg |

i'm guessing this is Babcock's view on next year's team - lineup start of season:
FW
Moore?? - Tavares - Marner
Kapanen?? - Matthews - Nylander
Marleau - Kadri - Mikheyev
Brown/Johnsson - Goat / Engvall - Korshkov
13th/14th: Goat or Engvall + Bracco
IR: Hyman
out: one of Brown / Johnsson (traded)
D
Rielly - [acquisition in trade Johnsson/Brown]
Muzzin - Zaitsev
Hainsey - Liljegren
7th: RHD UFA signing / Rosen
IR: Dermott
Andersen
UFA signing
That roster is probably not feasible due to caphit.
Looking at the fact that Leafs have a lot of depth on RW (Marner-Nylander-Brown-Kapanen-Moore-Bracco-Mikheyev-Korshkov) it is very likely that 1 or probably 2 of those players will be traded - unless moved to LW (Kapanen?).
Johnsson is probably gone if looking for a contract over 3.5mln (which he'll probably get from another team).
Will be an interesting off-season. |

If your biggest concern is games played, Nylander played 54, and Matthews played 68 and 62 last year. Never have I heard a peep about games played when it came to salary and term with either from you. Quite the opposite actually... |

If Matthews continues to miss a dozen or so games every year, then yes, it will be a problem.
Nylander playing in just 54 games this year is irrelevant. |

Problems are most likely he wants to play in the US and Leafs unlikely to be the highest bid in a trade. He would be a great addition, but I think quite unlikely to happen. He's probably a Bruin next year.

I guess by not overpaying their top players.. |

no thanks to Trouba. Would be great to have him but not at the price he will command.

With Nashville having a good group of defensive D-men, I wonder whether Preds would go after UFA Erik Karlsson - while trading PK Subban.
PK with some retained salary (2mln?) would be a great addition to the Leafs.

If he's not traded, Moore will not be ahead of him in the lineup.
We're not trading any of our guys, we'll find some Joffrey Loopholes.

I agree that if he stays, he'll be higher up in the lineup than Moore - although two completely different players.
I think most people underestimate the boost a player can get by playing with such a good player as Matthews - it's time for Matthews to get a player on his line that helps him as well. |
