They keep booing Dobson when he touches the puck in Halifax. He must be good. Or he did something to piss them off.

Rouyn-Noranda beat Halifax in the QMJHL final and Dobson won playoff MVP. They're booing him because he rules.

Seems about a year early to be talking about dumping Mayfield to me. I think, if he has a good camp, that Dobson will maybe get a 9 game look to start the season. I assume Mayfield and/or Boychuk would be the ones sitting depending on how many games he plays.

But next season when things could potentially get tight with the cap...Mayfield (or Hickey) should be relatively easy to move to get a little breathing room should Dobson or Wilde be able to make the jump. If Dobson is ready, I could see both Mayfield and Hickey being traded to make room for him and Aho.

- eichiefs9

Yeah makes sense, I think like you said it could definitely come next year as opposed to this season, just really depends if Dobson was to perform well in his nine games. Mayfield or Boychuk could sit for sure during the nine games, just likely would be moved before becoming a permanent spare if Dobson sticks with the main roster.

Nice write up Ben however, lets not jump the gun. playing "D"in the NHL is a bit tougher than in Juniors but they both look like they have NHL in their not to distant future.

Snow did an unbelievable job on the 2018 draft

Thanks!

Agreed that it's definitely a big step to take and it may not happen this coming year. If Dobson gets a nine-game stint and performs well though, I think there's a chance he could stick with the main roster next year.

nice write up Ben

My 2 cents..
I am a big fan of Mayfield. His work ethic has been talked about for the past few years in Isles circles and he seems to come back to camp in better Condition and a little bit faster and stronger each year. He just seems like the kind of guy you don't want to lose b/c as you pointed out he has a great contract, big body and seems to get better every year. ... My guess is Boychuck will be done before they have to move Mayfield. ...

His Bro flying F-16 for U.S. Air Force is pretty cool too. https://www.nhl.com/islan...itary-service/c-292852996

Thank you!

Yeah, definitely wasn't trying to make it seem like he's someone that the Islanders would actively seek to move, more so that it could become an option if a prospect was to make the jump and Boychuk is able to remain healthy enough.

Nice job Ben! Isles have a ton of options on D and can use D to trade for forwards.

Mayfield's play this past season & value of his contract is too good right now to even think about moving. There will always be injuries to dmen and Mayfield is a perfect player to either start or replace in lineup if a rook surprisingly makes team next year.
- Hell_Bent

Fair point about injuries for sure. Only thing is if a prospect was to make the team, is Mayfield more valuable as a spare than whatever asset Mayfield could bring back in a trade?

It's a great contract like you said but my thoughts are that other teams see that too. Again, not someone that the Islanders will be actively looking to move but if a rookie does make the jump, could be worthwhile to bring back a decent forward rather than keeping him as a spare.

Thanks for reading and the comment!

Again thank you Ben.
He has the talent offensively without question. If he plays the defensive side well in the 9 game show me then I agree he could push to be on the big team. If that’s the case then that’s the time to trade a piece he replaces but not this summer. Just my opinion of course.

Totally agreed. Didn't mean for the article to suggest it should be an offseason move, rather something that could happen in the future, my mistake if that's what it came off as.

No mistake on your part Ben, just my opinion on when to make a move in trading Leddy and or Mayfield which was your last couple blogs. I’m just pointing out that this summer May be jumping the gun a bit. Depleting the back end which was a strength before knowing the youngsters can handle the NHL game in my opinion my be short sided.

In any event, great blogs that get everyone talking about what the team should / shouldn’t do in the usual boring off season.

It’s somewhere close to zero % that mayfield gets moved. He played great in the playoffs and in season, is young, and is signed to a value contract besides Trotz consistently signing his praises all season and during the playoffs. Yeah sure anyone can get traded but I seriously doubt it happens especially with Lou bringing up kids slowly the way he does. I get he’s not ahl eligible next season but that’s not going to expedite Lameriello’s decision.

I could see Leddy potentially being moved if the right deal comes along but like some have already said Lameriello is most likely not going to take a chance with depleting his blue line on a player with limited nhl experience such as Aho.

100%. I see(hope) Lameriello going all in on trying to upgrade his offense through FA rather than trade so he doesn’t have to roll the dice with his blue line. We had the lowest GA in the league and contrary to what half wits like James Tanner who never watch this team play think a lot of that has to do with our defense and is not all due to goaltenders. If we saw Aho or Wotherspoon up for a few games here and there in season this would be more believable but that didn’t happen.

Would Mayfield be someone you would hold on to then and hope that Seattle scoops him up, then easily allowing one of the younger kids to fill in?

That makes no sense!

Mayfield has value currently, I would assume if exposed Lou would rather trade him then lose him for nothing.

They're probably going to expose Boychuk and will most likely end up giving up a 1st rounder to do it. That's a free $6M in cap space in two years, unless they can work out a trade for him prior to that.

I'd rather dump Ladd than Boychuk. Nearly as much money freed up in cap space and at least Boychuk gives 100% effort when he's on the ice.

If Mayfield at $1.4 is too expensive as an extra, what does that make Hickey at $2.5 for another three years?

Ladd is going to have two years remaining vs. Boychuk's one year, at the time of the expansion draft, at a similar cap hit.

It's not that I wouldn't rather dump him as well, but Isles would probably have to pony up a little more to entice Seattle to take Ladd and if we're already giving up a 1st rounder I'm not particularly inclined to add to that.

Thats the tough question, bc Leddy has better value at a higher cap hit to fetch a top F, would it be better off to pair Hickey w/Boychuk as 3rd pairing to limit Boychuk's ice time and maybe Boychuk can stay healthy and continue to be a bigger presence on D.
