I absolutely agree. I’m just saying for those suggesting we couldn’t package him up with Kessel that it’s a pretty ridiculous statement. Would the return be great? Of course not, but it is possible - WSCTeton17
No, it’s not and it is ridiculous, and while Im not great at trade ideas, I can tell you for certain that it’s not possible. |

You’re trying to tell us that JJ’s $1MM AAV buyout is so putrid that negates all of Phil’s value? Sorry man, that’s laughable. He’s a point per game player who’s good on the peeper. There are plenty of teams who need a guy like that and would buyout JJ in a heartbeat to do it. It’s not going to happen because we’re keeping JJ, but the idea that it isn’t possible is laughable. Wait, does Letang fall under the same category too? |

Letang? What the poop are you even talking about? You couldn’t make less sense.
You think teams would take on a salary and just buy out so easily? They still have to pay them out of their pocket!
A team might do it if they’re getting someone like Geno, but not Phil. |

I’m saying is Letang’s value fully negated by JJ in a trade too or is it just Phil and people less valuable than him. Literally within the realm of the same convo
The Avs just took Orpik and bought him out for the Caps and the Habs did the same for Steve Mason. Sure the players money due was a lot less but so was their returns. The Coyotes still pay part of Hossa’s contract, same goes for guys like Horton, Pronger etc.
The discussion is moot because GMJR doesn’t want to move JJ. The idea that you need to trade a generational talent to unload JJ is astronomically stupid imo. Didn’t you just have JJ going to Ottawa on your armchair GM? Wasn’t it like JJ, a 2nd and a 4th for a late pick? Are you then saying Kessel isn’t worth that other stuff? Hmmm... |

You realize the buyouts you mentioned were for like two years, right? Buying out JJ puts any team on the hook for eight years with a bump in the 22/23 season.
JJ Buyout Caphit:
2019-20 $270,833
2020-21 $1,270,833
2021-22 $1,270,833
2022-23 $2,020,833
2023-24 $1,020,833
2024-25 $1,020,833
2025-26 $1,020,833
2026-27 $1,020,833
EDIT: And no, my armchair included a pick, ZAR and retained salary. Nice try though! |

The next 3 years is the only thing that matters. Not to mention the fact the immediate help of not having JJ suck. Find a 2 mil bottom pairing D and you probably get a better player at the same cost.
It won't happen however. Rutherford has been completely defiant on the JJ issue. |

So we’re still retaining $750,000 of JJ? The buyout averages just over $1MM. So you’re trading ZAR and a 2nd for a 4th, a 5th and $257,000 AAV cap space. For all the complaining we talk about from GMJR that just doesn’t make sense. Not to mention it’s still going to take a 1st to unload him
Going back to what you said: it would take Geno to unload JJ straight up. So Kessel, Letang or Murray on their own aren’t enough... but somehow ZAR and a 2nd is worth JJ at $2.5MM to Ottawa. Very curious
So we agree that players with more term require more incentive to take on than players with shorter terms. To take on Steve Mason at $4.1MM it cost Armia (33 point pace in a middle 6 role) a 7th and a 4th. To take on Orpik at $5.5 for a year the Avs got Grubauer (923 sv% at the time) and the 47th pick.
Ryan Callahan has far more value than JJ. For someone like him you could get away with a ZAR type and a 2nd. If your offer is Kessel and JJ for a 3rd round pick I bet you a dozen teams or more make that trade and they trade Phil for more and either bury JJ or buy him out after a year.
What’s Phil worth to you? In relative terms I’ll say Phil is worth two late firsts and a third rounder. Even if you say Phil is worth one first rounder, you’re saying a first rounder isn’t enough to unload JJ but ZAR and a 2nd is? I just don’t see it |

Sometimes players just leave because they want more. It wouldn’t surprise me, and I’ve said this before, that Schultz would want to play on a team with a better D partner and where he has a shot at PP1. If he goes to NSH maybe he gets both opportunities and re-signs.
There will a line of teams wanting him next offseason likely including Vegas, Nashville (if they want to move on from PK), Colorado if Barrie prices himself out (Hi Cole!), St.Louis if they move Pietrangelo (let’s not pretend like these rumors ever went away), Winnipeg, etc etc. Point is there are more ideal fits for him if he wants out - WSCTeton17
If Kessel is traded, he might be on the top PP here. |
|
|
|
I think that would be a fantastic pole: what are some of our players worth. If Kessel and Schultz get you let’s say subban and a 3rd. What’s Schultz worth as a rental rn? I would say it has to be a first and a third, right? Maybe even including a prospect. So what’s Phil worth? A first and two seconds? Two firsts and a third? And what is Subban worth.. is he worth three first rounders? Or to put it another way, is he worth maybe Hallander and two firsts? But Schultz has to go out.. so without Phil is Subban worth Schultz, a 1st and a 2nd (or equivalents)? |
|
|
|

True, entirely possible. But if Subban comes back then he certainly gets that spot over Schultz
If all it cost to get Phil in AZ was Crouse and a 1st I would do it in a heartbeat. Problem is, that’s not fair value for a PPG player |

The next three years only matter for the Pens. He's talking about moving him to another team so they buy him out. They likely won't feel the same. |

What a sport this is that a team that was in dead last midway through the season is in the SCF.
Go Blues, I guess? I don’t think I hate Boston’s guts like a lot of people on here but I’m certainly not gonna root for them. But the Blues are just damn boring. I don’t think there’s a team in the league that I have less opinions about than the Blues. Maybe the Coyotes? |

Made sense? You’re quite the hypocrite, thanking me for not putting “LOL” and other stuff while piecing together a meaningful post (same as I do here) but you did that to some other guy this very blog. You’re kinda just being a lame bully so I don’t mind bringing up again how you thought Bobby Ryan had good footspeed, that Oleksiak had more points than Petts, that Florida would want Hornqvist when their top 6 is jammed and they’re possibly looking at Panarin, your 20-man Penguins roster that’s pushing an $83MM cap to name a few off the top of my head
I may be nitpicky and provide more info than needed, but at least I’m consistent and don’t shame others for doing something and then do the exact same thing |

For the football guys here. Ron Cook about Roethlisberger.
At least that’s what I expect him to say. Here’s what I wish he would say:
• On Brown’s claim that Roethlisberger has an “owner’s mentality, like he can call out anybody including coaches”:
“What A.B. won’t tell you is how many times I covered for him by not calling him out. Do you know how many times he ran the wrong routes? Or pouted when the ball wasn’t thrown his way enough? I constantly was trying to keep him happy. I’m glad he’s gone. Best of luck to Derek Carr in Oakland.”
• On Bell, who said Roethlisberger wants to win his way, freezes out teammates he’s not happy with and is tough to play with:
“We won two Super Bowls and played in a third before Le’Veon got here. We’ve won more games than any team but New England. We must be doing something right. And we would have won a lot more if Le’Veon wasn’t hurt so much or suspended twice for weed. Talk about a good teammate. By the way, ask Le’Veon how things are going for him so far with the Jets. Ask him if his new coach is kissing his behind the way Mike Tomlin did here.”
• On former teammate Hines Ward criticizing Roethlisberger for calling out teammates on his 93.7 The Fan radio show, saying “Keep my name out of your mouth” when talking to the media:
“This one tickles me. Didn’t Hines go on national television and call me out for not playing in a game in Baltimore when I had a concussion? I’m not perfect, but I’ve taken a beating over the years and played through just about everything. Hines can kiss my …”
• On former teammate Josh Harris accusing Roethlisberger of fumbling intentionally because he didn’t like the play call from Todd Haley:
“Josh Who? Tell me again why a nobody like him was playing? Oh, that’s right. Le’Veon was hurt again.”
• On former teammate Rashard Mendenhall calling Roethlisberger a racist:
“Consider the source. Mendenhall is the guy who supported Osama bin Laden. You think I care about his opinion?”
Now, that would be fun.
I don’t know how Roethlisberger will be able to control himself.
I know I couldn’t.
