Look, I’m not into discussing if I would trade one first round pick for a legit top 6 forward (who’s what, 23?) I would. But that’s not a realistic option, so it doesn’t make sense. You’re trying to use the Chewbacca defense on me and it isn’t working.

Yet you think the Leafs cap woes don’t factor in?

Lol. Ya a 47 goal scorer screwed the leafs
Lol
Some of the post on here are a joke.
Its funny you guys talk about the leafs so much.
Next year the cap will be tight.
After that, not so much.
The leafs have 3 great centers two of which are superstars, they have a great goalie and a great dman with some young D and forward talent coming up.
Theyll be fine after next year.

Continue to draft and develop. Savy hockey trade. Stay away from the high $ FA market.
- VanHockeyGuy

Ok no UFA that’s fine.
What is savvy as in who?
Needs a little more info thx

Vaive outscored JT & that gone them last place. Stats are for losers. Cap problems are real.

Nope, not at all. If you think the Canucks are going to swoop in and get a great player for nothing you are sadly mistaken.

Apparently JB's looking to acquire a "young D", that would be a step in the right direction.

We have a good chance of better D than the Leafs. They lose Gardiner & cannot afford anyone else. They got us big upfront.

The team seems to be getting better every Gillis contract extracted. Two years in a row the team has been climbing , so maybe the Gillis contract issue has some merit to it.
- VANTEL

Wow, don’t you think it probably has something to do with being an absolutely poop team and drafting 6th, 23rd, 5th, 5th, 7th over the past five years?

Along with Horvat of course, who was drafted six years ago.

Just out of curiosity who will the Leafs lose because of cap issues? Because all year I've heard all RFAs are getting offersheets and leaving. That stuff is fantasy world.
Most teams face cap issues this summer that are considered "good'.

Nope. Too much talent to lose just gonna adjust for a couple years imo.

Marner will sign.
Kap gets an OS
Johnnson signs
Gardiner walks
Horton has to be dealt

So...what more would you have the team do at this point? In the past 5 seasons we've added Horvat, Boeser, Demko, Peterson and Hughes. The team is now in a position to not be picking in the top 10 anymore. We'll be lucky to get a decent dman at the draft this year and considering the depth of the draft BPA ain't gonna be no great shakes. 5 years should be enough to 'build through the draft' unless it's the Oliers lol.

We've added Leivo and Pearson who have been solid. Now just a winger to play with Bo and an RHD to round out things this season. Can make decisions on Sutter Baerthci Edler Tanev as the year progresses. Promote Sautner and maybe another AHL D after Hutton is gone possibly.

Bottom line is we will not be picking top 10 in 2020. Need to start wrapping our heads around that. There are other ways to build, drafting and developing is only 33% of the process. Lots more intangibles to think about other than stockpiling picks.

- LordHumungous

Continue what they’re doing, building through the draft, it’s an ongoing process that never stops.

When the team shows they are in a position to be competitive in the sense that they could win a playoff round, then consider trading picks.

This team is no where near that at this stage. Keep building through the draft.

But we weren’t discussing trading that much for Nylander. It seems like you’re driving his price up by yourself and then saying that it’s ridiculous.

We are talking about a cap strapped team, that needs to either trade a player such as Nylander or lose one of their own RFA’s. We’ve already established that he won’t get full value in a trade due to cap constraints.

If they want the moon for him, then it’s not a sound trade for the Canucks.

- golfingsince

No they don't. Why can't they trade a Zaitsev and Brown instead of Nylander? Because you don't want to see that?
It does not have to be a "Big Name" at all. There are other pieces you cam move.

Nope. He'll be placed on LTIR and not count against the cap. His cap hit counted this past season.

Is someone really going to give out big money in a OS to a 44 point player? Doubtful. My prediction" 0 NHL offersheets.

5.3m against the cap for game 1.
Kap is worth a 3.5-4m OS for many teams.
There will be OS’s depends in if matched.
