I'm watching these playoffs and don't feel the Leafs need much to truly contend. If anything, they blew a great opportunity to win the cup this year. - RogerRoeper
They need heart and the ability to close a series.

This!
It's exactly the issue with the Leafs. In past playoff success, they had skilled leadership and leaders with tenacity. They lack the physical component that make teams successful in later rounds. You can win a series, if the matchup favours you, but once you get to round two, the teams left standing have the element of physicality and size. St. Louis is there, because they have a very large, physical defence, that shuts down the opposition forwards. San Jose does it with skilled forwards, many with size and two Norris Trophy defenders. Boston is there, because they have the ability to draft and trade for wingers with hunger and tenacity. Boston has the veteran core and the ability to win with special teams. Leafs have an overabundance of swift skating, but smaller wingers with offensive tools. What the Leafs lack is Special teams cohesion and the lack of power forwards that go to the dirty spots to compete with the type of teams like Boston or St.Louis. It's where they need to upgrade and stop falling in love with certain roster players that are part of the problem. Nylander wanted to be a mercenary so let him be the first to be moved after July 1st, once a $10M signing bonus is paid out. |

In this draft class it might give you a top pairing D or a top line F |

That pick basically got you a Nylander type before. Why not get Nylander again and without his cap hit anymore for 3 years of his ELC |

Because we could probably get a RHD that’s ready to play and what we need.
Or keep him so all the fanboys can rub one out easier during the games, either way it’s probably better then the 10th. |

Why would the leafs who want to win now trade actual nylander for a maybe nylander 3 years from now? That doesn't help us win now |

They can lose that $ in other moves for lesser players though. |

I would've kept him. Like I've said before, I expect him to be a 70+ player next decade. And no way he'll bring back a top pairing RHD... |

He could have brought back a nice D, but they got one without giving up anyone on their roster in Muzzin.
Nylander is incredibly underrated right now. |

Not really. Ask Calgary fans and the one Carolina fan what they think of Ferland's worth. - AdamFrench
Yeah, they say he’s a good player but just a complementary player that plays well with top players.
Kind of like Hyman...and I might even take Hyman at this point. |

Fans are dumb.
They use a rough half season after starting 30-40 games late to evaluate a player.
(frank) the other 200 games. That doesn’t matter.
There is no way he’s gone, he will be used as a top line player and ffs put him on that first PP unit.
The PP was struggling and instead of putting Hyman there put Willie there. |

Hits, fights and can score 20. He's basically like Hyman but better.
The Leafs can't afford him but if they get lucky and can move Marleau etc., I'd take him at 4 AAV or less.
If Johnsson costs the same AAV, I'd sign Ferland and trade Johnsson for D. - JohnFergusonJr
Oh man I just can’t

They are really dumb. And if Dubas traded Nylander when his value is low, they would pull a 180 and crap on Dubas for the trade once Nylander scores a ton of points next season. |

They have determined that nylander isn't gettig trade for value because the leafs cap issues. They have to keep Hortons on the cap for at least game one apparently
Also Tavares (frank)ed the leafs. - burn
