That didn’t work out well for Columbus, and I think teams will absolutely pay up for a 25 year old top pair right shot D coming off a 50 point season. I assume they will be allowed to talk contract before any trade happens so they will have a good idea or not as to whether that can sign him.

If I'm the Red Wings, Rangers or any other interested team, why am I giving up a blue chip defense prospect and my first round pick when I can just sign Trouba for money next July 1st? The Red Wings and Rangers aren't contending for a Cup. There's no rush to get Trouba now. Especially when Erik Karlsson is a UFA this summer. He's better than Trouba and I don't have to give anything up for him. Like the Leafs did with Tavares. They gave up nothing. If I'm a Cup contender like Winnipeg, why am I trading premium assets for a pending UFA?

As a Cup contender the goal is to add. Not subtract or make a lateral move. If Trouba didn't get traded last summer then why would he now? His value is lower because he has a year less left on his contract. I don't see how Trouba is getting traded. The Jets aren't giving him away and he's not worth over paying for.

Teams give up what you are saying you wont for pending UFA's at every deadline. so if its not Detroit or NYR it will be someone else in the states.

Teams like to bring in players and show them their culture which helps them sign them, see Zucarello just re signed today in Dallas

Karrleson is better but also comes with more injury risk and probably 2-3 million more price tag

the Jets are not a UFA destination and can not afford to let high end talent walk away for nothing. Trouba is a big piece but doesn't take them out of being contenders next year with his absence.

and most importantly, their is zero guarantee you can just sign him as a ufa

Really? Who's replacing Trouba's 50 points and 20 mins of ice time each night? Columbus obviously didn't like the lowball offers they received at the trade deadline for Bob and Panarin. Why would Trouba get a fair offer?

Trouba got extra power play time with buff out but in reality Buff, morrisey and Niku are all better options on PP, his ice time and points will be distributed by committee.

I'm not saying Winnipeg has to blown away by a trade offer or win the trade, I'm just saying they will get enough to pull the trigger. They haven't had a first round pick in two years now so a first rounder and roster player may get it done and someone will offer that.

Buff is getting older and is injury prone and when I hear "by committee" it makes me think the Jets defense isn't very deep when they lose Trouba. Like in football the coach will say "we have no clear cut number 1 running back. So it's running back by committee." What he's really saying is that "we can't run the football to save our lives." I get the whole selective justification thing. All fans do it.

Preparing yourself for Trouba leaving and trying to be positive about it. It's like when the Red Wings lost Sergei Fedorov back in 2003. "Oh see! We're better off with Robert Lang and Ray Whitney! Who needs Fedorov?" Uh no. I'm not buying the Jets being better without Trouba. Will they still be a good team? Yes. Cup contender? No.

Why are the Kings mentioned with all these aging vets? The Kings are the oldest team in the league and finished 2 worst. They even said they need to make changes and get younger.

The flip side since Luc/Blake is still delusional the Kings are a Cup contending team, Kessel makes sense since he went after Kovalchuck for no reason. If this does happen or Malkin then I hope Luc/Blake gets fired after not making the playoffs again.

never said we would be better without but that depends on the return or other moves I suppose.
as for cup contender, anyone making the playoffs is a cup contender so yes, we will still be a playoff team and therefore a contender, although I would personally have more faith with a new coach and not Maurice.
but hey, if your plan is to wait and have him knock on your door and beg you to sign him as a UFA in a year, great, good luck

I'm fine with the Red Wings signing Trouba. I'm fine if they don't. He's a good player to have. But not worth gutting your franchise for.
