Jesus, I'm sorry guys but you re-sign Hutton.

I don't even have the energy to call you fickle Canuck fans cum guzzlers let alone bless you with an argument.

Hutton is not Pouliot and is just a stop-gap until the younger guys are ready to step in which could be mid-season.

1 year, $2.4 mill - who cares?

Too late!

Although, I think that if they were to decide not to sign him, that wouldve already happened....

Wait - how do you propose to get Hutton to take a pay cut ? I mean he should, he is a fringe NHL player but that’s not happening. So cut your losses

I'm only quoting what someone put earlier. My mistake for taking some of you clowns at your word. But ya, he won't take a cut.

Qualify him at his 2.8, maybe he ends up with 3.3-ish.....

Its for 1 year. You need defensemen like him to round out the bottom pairing. Not necessarily at that price but again, its one year until the next waive comes along full-time...

Next waive being Brisebois, Sautner, Juolevi.....

he won't, there is no way.

That is why its best to let him go, and sign Rafferty or Teves to a cheap cheap 1 year contract instead of paying Hutton 2.8-3 million on one year. Easier and cheaper stop gaps out there.

EK has VAN at 15% to land Panarin. Not that i want him due to the $ and term he'd command, but he certainly would be a difference maker. My bet is still FLA.

Ugh, warm bodies at best......hey, why isn't Cole Cassels our 2LC after shutting down McDavid a few years back? Oh ya, he isn't a NHL player....just like Teves and Rafferty.....

i get what you are saying chompsey, but you gotta see it from the other side.
What we see infront of us is

Probably Edler - Stecher
Tanev - Hughes

We have Sautner / Schenn (likely to re-sign from what we gather) / Teves / Rafferty / Biega.

Auto-locking Hutton to a 1 year 2.8-3+ contract, just to save face on not losing him for nothing, doesn't need to happen when we have multiple cheaper options available. Not to mention Brisebois could be ready, Juolevi most likely not, but could potentially surprise. I don't think its unreasonable to see it from the other side.

we have seen such a small sample size out of Teves and Rafferty, but I think Rafferty had a very very strong showing in his short stint.

Either way, even if you eliminate those two, Sautner/Schenn/Brisebois/UFA's are all likely to come in cheaper, especially if we are talking about that bottom pairing defensive position, which is likely where Hutton slots in if Edler gets re-signed.

I agree, if it's for 1 year who gives a poop, it's not our money. They will be trying to make the playoffs so there's no way they go for Rafferty or Teves over a proven NHLer in Hutton

If Brisebois or Juolevi proves to be ready next year just retain salary and trade Hutton for whatever you can then?

My point is that they aren't ready and since the Canucks aren't doing any damage any time soon, another 3 months in the minors isn't going to hurt them.

Meanwhile, he now have an experienced guy who can move up the lineup if there are injuries. You need to insulate your goaltending.....Demko can't be left to dry as he's learning the NHL game.

It's 1 season and maybe he turns a corner? Doubtful, but when you have some cap room, you can afford to take low risk chances if it helps the team.....and I believe that it would....

From what I saw of Rafferty, I would put some chips on him....Teves? Naw. But they need some seasoning in the AHL. They aren't ready....

to be completely honest, I am not really sure when the Canucks lose their RFA rights to Hutton. I highly doubt Hutton is going to wait until the end of development camp to see if the Canucks wants to sign him or not after they get a good look at other players.

I would agree on Teves, but I thought Rafferty looked really good, and offered some offensive ability that the entire D lacked outside of Hughes.

Better yet, 1 year $4.7m who cares? Apparently the cap doesn’t matter, they have lots of space. It’s only (FA’s) money. Maybe he has a decent season and you can trade him at the deadline.

i get what you are saying chompsey, I don't completely disagree with you. Just trying to shed some proper insight on why I think people don't want him re-signed, instead of just "let him walk, or trade his rights away for another pick". I imagine that is what other people are thinking, or their rationale on the situation.

From my point of view, if Edler signs, our top 4 is pretty much locked barring injuries. The biggest wildcard looks to be that 5/6 D position. I get that Hutton is a stop gap for a year, but it really depends on how much you see this team improving next year. Can Rafferty/Sautner/Schenn/Biega replace Hutton at a fraction of the cost, and could a taker like Ottawa (his hometown and a organization lacking in D), could we squeeze a 3rd or a 4th for a proven NHLer? I personally would love to see him replaced from within and gain a pick, all the while sign someone cheaper. We ain't winning the cup next year anyway
