Jacques Martin is still a front-runner for the Sabres HC job???

This is so embarrassing. How long until Jack Eichel and Samson Reinhart tune the old geyser out? Training camp? Thanksgiving?

Elliotte Friedman just said on HNIC that Ralph Krueger is in the mix for the Sabres job, and maybe even a favorite (along with Tippett).

How Jacques Martin's name is even out there is absolutely astounding to me. He hasn't coached in 7 years, and he was a dinosaur even then.

It’s a perfect plan by the Sabres put a name like Martin out there for us so we are not upset when we pick ruff or Tippett

Sounds like we could do a lot worse...

Although during his time with the Swiss team, Krueger may have been known as a defensive-minded coach, he has also demonstrated the ability to deliver the offensive style of game. This was confirmed by his performance as coach for VEU Feldkirch in Austria. He has been described as a great communicator, positive thinker and a motivator. The book he authored (in German, also translated into French), called Teamlife - Beyond Setbacks to Success, was devoted to handling problems in life, and became a bestseller.[13]

The Oilers promoted Krueger to head coach for the 2012-13 NHL season, but he was relieved of his duties after only one season.[14] Hockey Canada subsequently added Krueger as a special adviser to its coaching staff for the 2014 Winter Olympics.[15][16]

Krueger was chosen to coach Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.[17]

Tippett was exposed badly with the Coyotes, yeah, he got "the best" out of them, but they didn't have any good players, you can bench your 1C if it's Martin Hanzal. I mean for (frank)'s sake OEL led them in scoring 2 of Tippett's last 3 years there and finished twice the other year. A defenseman led that team in scoring 4 of his 5 final years(Yandle also did it twice), and a so ancient Vrbata that makes Methuselah look young led the lone year. The last year.

Ruff

Tippett

Martin

Edit: I want to be so wrong about one of the jamokes they're going to hire. Really Tippett and Martin are the worst of the worst for me, they show no forward thinking on Botterill's part at all. That's how you get finishing 8-10 every year. Play it as safe as you can instead of taking a risk and getting a guy who thinks the game differently than a guy who's been in the league with zero success for 30 years.

He got a raw deal in Edmonton. In his one and only year Krueger had them 3rd out of 5 in the division. It also happened to be the lockout year, so he had no real training camp to speak of really to install a system. The 3 years preceding his arrival they were 5th of 5 in the division; the 3 succeeding years after he left they were 7th, 6th, and 7th of 7.

The whole (frank)ing reason I came on here...

@Hank

Have you seen this "Formula 1: Drive to Survive" on Netflix? It's pretty cool, it's a behind the scenes of last year. Kinda heartbreaking how they build up Ricciardo in the beginning cause you just know it goes to poop pretty quickly.

I'll watch the race tomorrow, I'll be up, but I don't even care anymore. I'm rooting for Haas to finish ahead of where they start and that's it.

Edit: It's a shame too, because it's at Catalunya and I know every corner from playing it on Forza a million times. There and Spa are my favorites.

He's been the best candidate all along. No one really knows if he wants to coach. He's qualified for bigger and better things.

You mean he hasn't been a head coach, right, because he's currently an assistant coach with the Penguins?

This may have been shared but good read

Thanks for sharing.
It confirms through AA what the naked eye test reveals, and that what most posters on here already know.
Scandella had a horrible 2 seasons, with the last being worse than the previous...trending down again this upcoming season?
Sobotka sucks.
They need for those two players to be gone. It will be addition by subtraction.

Okposo and Thompson also are poor on the O.
We saw this play out in spades last season.
Limit Okposo's liability on the O by putting him on 4th line.
Thompson needs serious development and should see a full year of AHL duty to do so.

But, IMO the punchline is undeniable.
The players cited in the DBTB article are all acquisitions of Botts, save Okposo (who's value and production declined significantly after the concussions of 2 years ago).

So, while it is true that Botts inherited a mess of a roster, he has also created a mess at the NHL level by his own doing. Half of his digging out of a ditch will be to rectify his own mistakes.

We got lucky Berglund quit
Botts does still have a lot of work to do
Especially if Skinner walks

Definitely lucky Berglued quit but Bott has a ton of work to do if Skinner stays, not sure how he can be replaced if he walks
With the coaching search I've gone from having favorites to at this point please anyone other than Martin

So Ralph Krueger is the flavor you guys like in your espresso of head coaching candidates? He has coached only one season and that's a strike shortened season with the Oilers? And he has spent most of his time in Europe? I just don't see him as a viable candidate for coach. On an executive level, sure.

He doesn't have the NHL HC experience that we understand Botts is looking for. Make him President of Hockey Ops, yes. Considering his past experience as chairman of Southampton football, that seems like a better role for him.

If Skinner walks, we are pretty screwed
We need to add 40 or so goals WITH him
It’ll be pretty much impossible to add 80ish
