I really dont see Matta here or Johnson next year. I also think Rutherford was mentioning Hornquist as well. I think they're all pieces to get what fits the Pens more.

If Hornqvist doesn’t rebound from last year, there really isn’t much difference with Ryan here for $1M more, and we get JJ out.

It was just a thought though.

EDIT: Bobby Ryan at full price is bad, but OTT retaining $1M and taking back JJ saves them money, makes a slight lateral move from Horn to Ryan. I mean, Ryan put up 42 points on a terrible OTT team.

Playing 3rd line RW, it isn’t inconceivable that he puts up 45 to 50 points on the Pens.

Trade it for reaves.

And to be fair, I hate Marchand too, I just think it’s weird that the face lick thing was the bridge too far and not the knee to knees.

Glendening IMO brings a similar game to Rust, but obviously a lesser player for half the price, a little more snarl and upgrades our 4th line.

Ryan has decent speed and while he may not bring the net front presence Horn has, he can play physical a probably notch 45ish points for $1M more than Horn, but we get JJ off the roster.

Anisimov brings a stable responsible presence as a 3C; he’s got a solid all around game while bumping Bjugstad to the 1st.

Overall the Pens add a little speed, a little grit, bolster the top six and 3C position, fresh faces and get JJ out.

EDIT: actually with the retention, Ryan only makes $500K more than Horn.

Anisimov is okay and I’m okay with acquiring him although I don’t think he’s fantastic or even necessary with Bjugstad as 3C. And I’m fine with moving Horny for him as I think Horny is meh.

I think overall you just made the Pens forward group far slower than they were and the only positives were removing JJ and adding Anisimov but I don’t think this roster is better or worse than last years. I think it’s essentially a wash with the anchors you’ve acquired on forward.

Backwards if you’re trying to build a speed based team. If the team system shifted to a carry the puck up by group ala Johnston’s first season in PIT, it might work? But I think the Pens would need even more turnover to make a system like that work.
