Because offense and puck-moving ability make the wheels on the bus go round and round.
The prototypical "shutdown defenseman" (obviously, like everything, there are exceptions) is typically an average-or-worse skater, chips the puck out instead of making a good breakout pass and/or skating the puck out of the zone with control, and doesn't contribute on offense.
The argument against guys that are "good in their own zone" is typically, and somewhat rightfully so, that they wouldn't have to play in their own zone if they were better able to get the puck out of their zone. - Harambe
I agree the Derian Hatcher's of the world have no place in today's NHL, but you can't tell me that you wouldn't pay for someone like Hjalmarsson on your team.
Again, this is where I think for years people undervalued McD and G when they were actually at the top of their game. Yes, Hank had a very big part of this, but there was a time when if the Rangers were up a goal in the third, you knew it was game over. You have to be able to outlet the pass out of the zone, but those shutdown in the defensive zone guys are worth their weight in gold. No team is ever going to spend 100% of their time in the offensive zone no matter how well they drive possession. There's a reason why advanced stat gods (at least in terms of Ranger players) like Rafael Diaz and Clendening can't find jobs in the league. You can be as good a passer and skater you want, but defense is still a huge thing in this league. Guys like Karlsson can get away with it because they are getting tons of points. |

We all have lol.
While we obviously have no Karlsson's in our system, I think we will be fine back there. I really think ADA and eventually Miller will be huge weapons from the back end. |

Last time I watched he was with Burns. Maybe that was just the PP but I thought they paired up
I just think the Karlsson we would be getting wouldn't be the Karlsson that carried Ottawa and everyone is still beating the hog to. The end of that contract would be horrendous, plus we don't have anyone on that side right now to pair him with that wouldn't be considered an anchor to him. - mdw7413
I’ve watched most of their games start to finish, and he’s been with Dillion at even strength. Not saying Karlsson has looked great in the dzone, but Dillion doesn’t exactly makes the best plays either
Miller and or Hajek, should be his partner down the road. Hajek showed some Slavin type moments. I know it’s an extremely smaller sample, but that’s the idea play him with a defense first kind of guy
No one is taking into account that maybe, just maybe, Karlsson is a freak of nature. Nothing has told me that he isn’t, I’ll say that |

Damn. Substitute that marg for an IPA, and I'm jealous. No, stuck at work on a slow day and having to eat poopty Chinese food for lunch. |

Really high hopes for those two. ADA's game is really coming around once he pulled his head out of his ass. |

I'd be thrilled if Hajek becomes the next Slavin.

I'm going to stick by what I think. I think it would be a very good signing for about 2-3 years and then it will be the worst. I also don't think the Rangers have any interest in him especially after picking up Fox. I think its all about the offense and Panarin will be their target. |

Yep. With the 3s leaving in a few years and our D prospects looking pretty good, getting either Hughes or Kakko, I see them going after Panarin over EK. |
