I would think Gusto should be worth more than Hartman, but I guess you got to figure in that Hartman was a trade deadline deal.
- LAHawk

TDL factor aside, definitely Gustafsson > Hartman.

Penguins might be a Gustafsson taker for the 21st pick.
- GPHawksfan

Worth considering. Brouwer was traded for the Caps 1st rounder (26th overall) which netted Danault. Somewhat similar but compared to where they each are/were at that point of their careers, Gustafsson is likely more coveted than Brouwer. 21st pick is obviously greater than the 26th pick but wonder if the Hawks could get more for Gustafsson (i.e. high 1st rounder + another asset).

Only if the other team knew they could immediately re-sign Gus to a long term deal. Iā€™d take the 21st overall for Gus in a heartbeat.

Boqvist, Byram, Knight. The next Keith, Seabs, Crow?
- -Doh-

As far as the next core, fun question to answer. An initial take on this:

Keith: Jokiharju or Beaudin
Seabrook: no one currently but Byram possibly if drafted at #3
Hjalmarsson: Carlsson
Toews: ditto as Seabrook but Turcotte perhaps
Kane: nobody unless Hughes drops to #3
Hossa: nobody
Crawford: not sure about Delia, maybe Gravel

If they make that offer, Stan needs to accept and get the paperwork filed faster than the Pens can come to their senses.

Hossa was pretty much a one-off for all he brought to the table.

Gus is a bit of a unique situation, but definitely they should get more. His overblown defensive play aside, there aren't really many dmen with his offensive output traded. When they are, the deal usually includes more than one assist coming back the other way. Odds are decent that they don't move him at this point because they don't have an offensive replacement. None of the young Dman have proven anything at the NHL level and Gus has become a huge part of the PP.

Stan can then draft Jakob Pelletier.

They picks their system is bare but not a bad idea. I think gust won't get a 1st maybe 26 -31 but more likely a 2nd which i take in a heartbeat. So it comes down to three things:
Keep gust for his last year and trade him at tdl next season
Trade at the draft this season
Let him go at the end of next season for nothing because he going to want a raise and most likely want 4 to 5 million hawks cannot afford that with the looming raises for dcat and strome.

CAR already with their second PP. Ref's actually making calls is nice to see. They don't play all that heavy, but everyone on the team keeps their feet moving the entire time.

I think its about 90% they keep him unless they get a huge offer. Again, another guy who said first thing during the last interview that he needs to be better defensively. if he proves he can do that, I have no issue with him coming back.

Gust is 27 he he is what he is a subpar defense man in his own d zone and rest of the league gm's knows that.

Fair enough, but if he does prove to be better defensively, while also putting up the points does that change your perception?

So you see great Off and bad D in Bowen? most people made it sound like great off and AVG D, And AVG physicality. Boquist would be great off, bad D and bad physicality. just curious.

Lacks defensive zone awareness, I am not so sure his gifts are hiding the necessary hockey IQ to read, so you are not always to over -react.

I just encourage all to watch the CHL prospects game, it will be on again I am sure on cable is other places, I bet. You judge Bowen Byram against those peers, no tip ins of is shots or pinball goals.

The two players are not the same body structure sure, but Boqvist to me reads the ice well everywhere, and is two years from being able physically to do what I ma pretty sure he is aware NHL defenseman have to do with attacking forwards of all sizes. He is Karlsson type no disguise to that.

Byram certainly has TREMENDOUS balance and needs little effort to glide anywhere through the coverages, around the defenders, there is a gift there that we see against WHL players. But he also gets lost.
Boqvist doesn't get lost, just can't follow through.

Prince Albert beat Vancouver Giants 1 - 0 last night, three minor penalties for Giants.

Two calls on Bryam, first period two minute unsportsmanlike conduct
and a two minute interference penalty midway through the 3rd period.

If Ryan Hartman was traded for a 1st - then at least the same return should be expected for Gustafsson.

BUT...they all still covet these types...come on, he finally was handed a spot and helped revitalize the Hawk PP.

I am not playing Devil's advocate as much as the league still sees Gus' offensive side negating the defensive inconsistencies, the same way a certain Vancouver Giants offense man is being scouted and touted...

Agreed, while I didnā€™t think the ā€˜Canes were a bunch of lavender sniffers, I am surprised at how physical they are playing with the Bruins so far.

Hartman was young with hope of improving, Gus is no spring chicken and likely just had his ā€œcareer yearā€.

Ok, granted that, but Gus fills a specialty niche as an offensive defenseman which is more than even the promise of Ryan Hartman ever was.
