One never really knows what team is going to do. In my personal opinion, a 1-for-1 trade seems fair, but looking at the balance of a move is hard to gauge.
1) Subban is two years younger and that's definitely a factor.
2) Their contracts end the same year.
3) Top pairing top-four RD are harder to come by than quality forwards.
4) Kessel is a far more dynamic player than anyone gives him credit for and while NSH has dynamic forwards in Johansen and Forseberg, outside of them they don't really have anyone like Kessel. He'd be a HUGE boost to their forward group.
5) They are deep enough defensively that they can buy whatever else they need.
6) NSH would be saving $2.2M in cap space to go shore up their defense.
So, IMO it's a trade that works for both sides if the Pens are able to make secondary moves to free up the space.
I'm sure others would presume NSH would want more. - Rinosaur
I agree on all of these fronts. I look at Rutherford and Poile and how much they are old school GMs. How many hockey trades have they made involving one for one or maybe an added pick or something? I can think of a good many off of the top of my head. I have to think that both, if there is mutual interest, would want to make the deal as quickly as possible and keep it simple as possible. Penguins dont have a ton of good picks to throw in, but I'd throw another small piece in to get it done.
The cap implications are a big question. With our backs against the wall cap wise, additional moves would be warranted. Getting another defenseman would mean now at least two have to go. Would Schultz become expandable? Would Gudbranson now be a guy to trade since his cap hit is among the biggest among expandable defenseman?
At the forward level, where do those extra goals come from? I happen to think a big problem for a lot of our forwards, Malkin especially, is that our defense could not get them the puck quickly and break it out. Adding Subban helps the forwards out in that way. |

This wouldn't be the only move they'd be making. If they got Subban, Schultz would be the likeliest candidate. They'd have to do some kind of Schultz package for a top six winger, or move him out in a cap dump for futures then sign a UFA. |

I know Holland lost his mojo at the end in Detroit but I think this is a good hire for them. They needed someone from an outside organization not connected to all of the Oiler failures. |

For sure if Subban is coming in, the Pens are trading Schultz. Question would be whether Schultz goes in a package with Kessel to the Preds.
Schultz as a rental should be worth a solid prospect and a 1st.
If you are making a trade for Subban, I'd hope for one of these two deals:
Kessel & Schultz for Subban & Tolvanen.
Kessel & Maata for Subban. I'd throw in a decent pick/prospect package to sub JJ in for Maata but I don't see any circumstances where that happens. |
