Nylander is officially a reclamation project. The only way for him to maximize his value to this team is to play with Matthews and give him a chance to boost his scoring.
He is miscast as a centerman. He refuses to play physically and responsibly defensively when it matters. As a skilled, perimeter winger, which is his only dimension right now, he won't be asked to.
A Matthews / Nylander line need a Hyman type player to play with them. Johnsson and Kapanen have shown so far they can't do it. If either of them can't grow into that role then it's on Dubas to find a guy who can.
If Nylander doesn't add more dimensions to his game or isn't scoring 75+ points on a line with Matthews he is over paid as a one dimensional player. That's on him to improve and merit that contract. |

Honestly I thought that Willie looked just fine the last couple of games, with the exception that he might as well have been playing 5v3 because Marleau and Brown were like tits on a (frank)ing bull out there. They should have switched wingers with the fourth line as Willie between Ennis and Moore would have been so much (frank)ing better. - lumlums

What's the fastest way to the 2nd round if you're the Bruins? Take the Gardiner expressway.
All kidding aside. Last night was lost because:
- Babs got outcoached(Matthews didn't play enough, Marleau and Nylander too much)
- Freddie couldn't provide the same kind of play he did in game 6
- Jake Gardiner
Game 6 was truly our game 7, and the fact that we didn't close it out then showed. Matthews did a good job of coming around as the series went on, and our best players were for the most part our best players. |

Not to get all pedantic on you, but Mike Gartner was never an all-star.
He played in all-star games, but being an "all-star" means you were named to the 1st or 2nd all-star teams at the end of the year.
Gartner never was, meaning in his entire (lengthy) career, he was never deemed the best or second best at his position.
And if you compare the 708 goals vs. 551, a lot of that can be chalked up to era. |

After a preliminary (and final) search all I could find was “lacks vigour on backcheck”..
It was a reputable source who was saying it though, Friedman/MacKenzie level, not amateur Dangle level. |

As for the offseason:
- New Backup
- Move Kadri at the draft. Even a decent prospect would suffice but I wouldn't be surprised if a good ol' fashioned 'hockey trade' like Jones for Johansen a few years back happens to put another blueliner on the back end
- Explore free agency for either that replacement 3rd line centre or top Dman. Even though I'm not too optimistic, it must be easier to attract free agents with a team that has the skill to make the playoffs. The real question is whether Dubas overpays.
- Try to find a new home for Marleau if there's a real chance to do so.
- Get Marner signed for 8 years.
- Look at getting Muzzin resigned sooner rather than later. I like his game and he is what we need more of on the blueline. It was a good trade for Dubas.
I doubt Sandin and Lilje are ready for the NHL yet. It'd be nice but I expect another year in the AHL for both of them. I also think that if we can't find a new third line centre, then plug Nylander there for a year and see if he can get his numbers up enough that he becomes a trade asset. |

well he's 7th all time in goals for starters - BestRapperAlive
Ask yourself some basic questions:
- Before he came to the Leafs, did you ever phone up your buddies and see if you could get tickets to the Leafs game because Mike Gartner was coming to town, and you just had to see him?
- Was there ever a buzz outside Maple Leaf Gardens because Mike Gartner was playing?
- Did you ever ignore the puck and just watch Mike Gartner when he was on the ice?
- In a playoff game, did you ever fear that Mike Gartner was just going to take over the game?
Because I can say "hell yes" to Lindros. I can't say yes to any of the above for Gartner.
He was a good player for a very long, long time.
In my humble opinion, that shouldn't get you into the Hockey Hall of Fame. |

If he’s going to be any value to the Leafs he needs to earn a lot more of that 7mil contract. If what he does well is little things like zone-entries, creating space, and stick-checking then he needs to do all those thug perfectly and find a way to use his game to help other players produce. Nylanders desire to hold onto the puck takes away a lot of the offence the Leafs have. Play good defence, get open to receive a pass, gain the zone, pass to Matthews, go to the net. No more fly-bys and taking shifts off. Start him with Papi (if he’s not traded) and be hard on him. Make his adjust, or demand a trade.

And our 3rd line centre was sitting in the pressbox due to a selfish act of stupidity, forcing us to have a weaker lineup.

I was listening to one of the talk shows after Kadri got tossed, and the general consensus amongst the talking heads (I think Friedman or McKenzie?!?!) was that some GMs would still want him, and some GMs may even want him more because of the "edge to his game."
His cap hit is fantastic for what he provides.
I just can't stand his stupidity.

We didn't exactly get pushed around out there without him. Boston wasn't the complete gong show like in year past and we have guys who pushed back, or can get guys who pushed back.
Not that a tonne of pushback is needed as Boston will always get treated differently by the refs like in the case of Chara. We just needed to score more goals than them in one freakin' game. |
