I'm not about never signing anyone, you just can't structure your team where 1/2 the team is on ELCS. I get that if we win the cup it would be worth it, but as bad as Toronto and Tampa's future cap situations are, it would make ours that much worse in a couple seasons. I can almost guarantee that Panarin and Duchense are going to want some kind of NMC/NTC in their contracts, you'd have no real way to clear cap once the s hit the fan so to speak.
TLDR, signing one big name UFA is sustainable, paying top money for 2 is not. Sign Panarin and then maybe offer 4-5 million for a midtier guy. - 2sticks1puck
Dude right now in a couple seasons they have like 11 million tied up in players, that’s it. This is actually when you take advantage of being such a young team and spend without it killing you. Your worried about 5-6 years from now, that’s crazy.
And other then Kakko and maybe Shesty or Kravstov, possibly Chytil, no one will truly be breaking the bank anytime soon |

I'm just asking an honest question: How fast would you expect a team with 8 ELCs to contend? It certainly would not be next year, and the year after that looks kind of iffy. I don't think its ridiculous that I'd worry about only having one real year to contend before being in cap hell. It's not just the people on the roster that's the issue, who are the other depth pieces you'd sign? Heres what the lineup would look like in three seasons if you trade everyone and let Zib walk
Panarin-Duchense-Kakko
Kravs?-Chytil-Buch
Lem?-Howden?-?
?-Lias?-?
Miller-ADA
Hajek-Fox?
Skeji-Lundqvist?
Georgie
Shesty
That's hoping everyone reaches their potential and can play the roles that I have outlined for them. Maybe you get lucky and gems like Barron,Keane,Renaunen and whoever we pick up with other picks in this upcoming draft continue to develop and are also on ELCs. If Panarin gets 11 or 12, Duchense probably gets 9 or 10, if you are lucky maybe Kakko only makes 6 or 7 million at that point. That's close to 30 million tied up in just your first line. Even if the cap is 100 million that's close to a 1/3 usage. Skjei is already making 5 million. Buch, Chytil, and Kravs will probably get 20 million combined if we are lucky.
If the guys coming up after this year are good, your strategy could look brilliant. Statistical probability goes against that every one of those guys will hit. If we need need to sign depth guys in order to compete, I'm not sure that we could. |

I mean I'd be the last person to like this move.
I want another year of trying to get as many young players as possible and then start to spend. But to say they wouldn't have enough money if they traded Kreider, Vesey and Vlad is wrong. TPC and MDW are dumb, forgive them. - tomburton99
I kind of agree. There's some disillusion that since they'll get one of Kakko or Hughes, they'll be in the playoff hunt. Look at Vancouver. They've got a pretty similar situation up there with Peterson Horvat Boeser and Hughes...
I think signing Panarin will help, but they'll still be a bottom half team next year. If they don't get Panarin, I think they'll be a couple more wins better than this year, fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it. |

You need foundation guys. We have a bunch of kids with potential. We have no one other then Zib (and it’s probably a reach saying this), where you can count on players game in and game out. All I know is this org is not going to rebuild forever and not spend money, it’s NYC, that’s poop doesn’t fly for much longer. That’s the bottom line.
As far as depth guys, we are literally littered with depth guys. Blah players who fill out bottom 6 and bottom pair roles
As far as Duchesne, he’s been pretty underwhelming since he came into the league, but he hit another gear vs TB. Maybe it’s finally all coming together for him. You all wanted to sign JT last summer, I don’t see the difference now. JT May be better, but it’s the same situation we’re in. I’m not in love with the center ice position either, moving forward.
My point with this is always the same, eventually you gotta spend to compete. Sure drafting well is a major thing, but you still need to spend where needed and now you have two studs available WITHOUT GIVING UP pieces, and even more you have to do it eventually anyway. It’s a must to buy players, may aswell be ASAP imo |

So, the show will be over in about 2 months and I haven't watched since the Red Wedding (about 47 years ago). So, since this is the 1st time it's come up, how exactly am I "that person?" |

I guess. Or, I contributed to the joke about consent?
And you're that person that HAD to make a big deal about it. Why did you have to tell us that you DO watch it? Why did you HAVE TO point out something about someone else?
Might be time to think about where you sit on the Big Totem Pole of life.
(that one's for you, Jimbo. Run with it!!) |
