Hmmm...

Half is way too much but I'd be willing to do a combination of things like retain 1M, part with a 3rd/4th, move back a bit in round 1, take on a short term (1 or 2 year) cap dump and part ways with a handful of different depth roster players or 2nd tier prospects.

I'd rather they avoid big name UFAs like the plague. Long term investments in UFAs rarely turn out well.
- MaximumBone

Yeah I think UFAs are still an important way to improve the squad and their UFA options should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Options like Lucic and Russell who were clearly identified as terrible contracts the moment they were signed should obviously be avoided. Tavares on the other hand has turned out well for the Leafs (although they are still in cap trouble).

Once (if) the disaster of a cap situation is cleared up the Oil should be using the small appeal they do have (i.e., possibility of playing with McDavid) to entice more premier free agents while they have that luxury.

I think Ottawa would be a good team to target for Lucic and Russell. They need to get to the cap floor and we can add some sweeteners.

Ottawa - 8th OA, M.Lucic, K.Russell, K.Yamamoto & E.Bear

Edmonton - 19th OA & C.Ceci (who seems to be on the outs in Ottawa).

Agreed, them or any team that is trying to get to the cap floor is a good target.

It would also be great if the Oil could drop some cap by simply taking a cash hit like the Leafs did with Nathan Horton.

Not sure how Ottawa could say ‘no’ to that deal

Interesting proposal. But then that puts Yammer and Bear in my division and Ceci out. No. Go to Arizona with this poop.

I'd rather pull of a split cap retention deal to lessen the price of the sweetener.

I wonder if us switching bad dmen would be helpful to see if they’d fit into each other’s plans better.

Russell and Nurse for Daley, Green, and Ericsson.

Russell and Manning for Dekeyser.

Lucic and a 2020 2nd for Dekeyser.

Dekeyser had his best season in awhile this year. He’s still my number one get the (frank) out of here realistically, but he’d get a second I think if he were made available.

I don’t think there’s much of s trade market between our teams anymore. Not until we see how next season’s opening night roster pans out. I think Veleno, Zadina, and Berggren can make others expendable if they show they can make the team.

I don't think he gets a 2nd as his contract is still ugly, but he clearly has more value than Lucic.

I agree with the reasons to avoid Letang...contract, price, etc, but I think his injury issues are pretty much gone. I've seen him in the gym the past several years and this past summer was much different. He was extra beast mode in the gym and even more impressive and focused on the ice. I actually had him for my Norris pick this year (wrong!).

I'd take him in a heartbeat but it all depends on the value.

Kris Letang - The big one and the one I would most likely stay away from. Letang is a brilliant player and one of the most potent offensive weapons on the backend in the entire league. The issues with Letang are three-fold; his injury history, his age, and his contract. Letang has not played a full 82 game season since 2010/2011 and has missed nearly half the season on multiple occasions. His production despite missing the time he has highlights what a great player he is but Edmonton needs someone on the backend who they know will be healthy for most of the season. Letang is 31 and has three more years remaining on a contract that has a cap-hit of 7.25 million annually.

Potential Asking Price From Pittsburgh: Oscar Klefbom or Darnell Nurse would have to be included for the deal to make sense for the Penguins, and likely they would be looking for a first round pick as well. Much to expensive for Edmonton to even entertain.

All the more reason this is the guy the Edmonton franchise would go after

Well, I am not the GM so I'd have to pass on that. I want to do all I can to avoid taking on more cap space when dumping Johnson.

I can throw in ZAR if that helps your decision. He for some odd ass reason is great when paired with Malkin, but 4th line quality elsewhere with us. Strong netfront for a power play unit and might snag that strong synergy with one of your centers.

Jesus christ Pittsburgh has so little to work with for trades >_<

Well, the net cap gain on your side would be minimal in the 1 for 1 swap. Can change the numbers so we both have the same total change (idk, its be like 2.875 mil retained or something, you know what I mean).

I personally like ZAR a lot, but if Sully wont pair him with Malkin he is a wasted asset here with solid potential.

The whole point in moving him is to free up some space or get someone useful out of it. I'm not keen on having anything to do with Johnson given his overall negative impact on just about everything.

Well then we are at an impasse. We both want space and no Johnson.

How about you guys take Johnson... and half of Lucic's cap hit... then break Johnson's knees and LTIR him for the rest of his career?

I'd sooner just break Lucic's knees and LTIR him for the rest of his career. Costs one less plane ticket

Pffft... but that's how you get caught. Gotta trade for a player you label as "the missing piece" and then turn him into a high school graduate level Dr. Xavier.
