even though I threw that trade proposal out, I am quite in favor of NOT TRADING the 2nd overall pick, whether it's Hughes or Kakko.

I think it's #fakenews anyway. Every year there is a story how the host city wants to make a splash. The only time I remember happening in recent years was the Schneider trade, and I bet NJD would really like a do-over on that one.

I have no doubt the Canucks would love to unite the Hughes brothers but I think they are going to be out of luck

Yeah they would.

Relatedly, I thought it'd be the Devils who try to unite the brothers. That would seem more likely, although still with a low probability of happening.

I think the Canucks would be willing to trade practically anything to have both Hughes along with Pettersson

They will be. If we do draft Kakko, we shouldn't be tanking but start accumulating assets for our next run. The draft is deep enough where even picking in the early teens next year (where we will probably be), we could still get a really good player. This basically could be a repeat of the draft that shall not be named from that time. Hopefully, this time it's the Isles that takes the massive bust.

They'll be better, yeah, but a lot has to happen for them to make major strides. Let's not forget, this team masked a lot of their issues throughout the season with loser points and fight/determination. Also, the teams around us are also getting better...

Need to level set our expectations a little. Second overall is incredible and will do wonders for this organization, but we can't etch our names on the cup because of one 17 year old.

I think they're headed in the right direction, but we're not in the clear just yet.

I don't think it's unrealistic if we get Kakko that we'd pick in say the 11-14 range. We did get a bunch of loser points, but also don't forget we struggled to score goals at times. We will also get a potential dynamic scorer when Kravs comes over. It's not a stretch to think guys like Howden and Chytil could do a bit better than last year and Buch seems to have turned a corner. I'm not being delusional in thinking that we will be good/ a playoff team, but I think it's well within the possibility we would be improved. Don't forget, we were only 4 points behind the Flyers who had only the 10th worst record in the league.

Another factor is if there is a bigger push to tank next year by teams for a deeper draft, somebody has to win those games between bad teams.

Yup, I agree on all accounts, except I think we'll be picking in the 1-14 range

I don't think the NHL would let us win the lottery twice in a row.

NYR could maybe use some draft picks this year to also move up in next years draft as well?

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't know that a team in the right range would bite, but we have a plethora of picks to dangle.
