Hughes played on the US18 team, and that team played some top-tier college programs. I am not going to pull up their schedule right now, but I know off the top of my head, I know that they played and beat Michigan.
I am with Jimbo on this, I think Hughes is going to be a total stud, and I don't think that being as good as Matthews is out of the question. The kid is an absurdly good player.
As for the Barkov/Kakko comparisons, it took Barkov several years to put up the point totals he put up this year. For his first 3 years in the league, I believe he was a 50-60 point guy. That's not a bad thing. It's just a cautionary tale that sometimes a guy might not light the league on fire right away. - Pete V
I'm not bashing either guy, I just don't think either is going to be a major superstar. I respect where you're coming from, but I could not disagree more that Hughes will ever be mentioned in the same sentence as Matthews. Matthews is absurdly talented, I just don't think Hughes is going to be in the same tier. |

Hughes would deserve the hype too. He is just going to take a lil while to mold. What would concern me is we aren't exactly known for having the best developmental coaching. Hughes is going to need some coaching, although he can do alot on talent alone. Kakko can just step on the ice and be a pro almost right away. - 2sticks1puck
I respectfully disagree on Hughes. I think the kid is way, way more advanced than you are giving him credit for. IMO, he's an elite player, and I am kind of surprised that he's taken a bit of a hit from a perception perspective. Not sure what he's done to deserve it. He's an elite skater, elite vision and very high hockey IQ. He's just really small. I think it's less about his skill development, and more about becoming physically stronger/bigger. |

I mean they had the same amount of playoff points. I just don't think it's as simple as comparing two guys that played in different years for different teams. Barkov just scored 96pts in the NHL and I'm not of the belief that Kakko is the kind of player will do the same. Hughes either. - eichiefs9

This is when you tell us Hughes didn't get granted exceptional status but Tavares did.
The Rangers have someone with exceptional status, they don't need another. |

If Kakko goes first, this blog should be fun.... - airjan23
I don't understand the hate for Hughes. He's 17 years old and will put on weight, just like every other human in the world (except for Tom). But "because he looks frail", we want the guy consistently ranked as the second best player in the draft |

Nobody hates Hughes. I think we are just all in on Kakko since that is the likely player coming. I will be all excited for Hughes if for some reason Kakko goes first. Pete V is giving me a hard on with his take on the situation. |

I don't hate Hughes, I'm just excited we are probably getting someone who set the record for a U18 player playing in a mens league. Kakko is a way more finished product. Don't forget that Hughes had elite talent playing around him.
I think most rational people aren't like "Hughes shouldn't be picked in the top 10". I just think their are many including myself that are thinking "I'm not sure how Kakko isn't the number 1 prospect" |

I hate Hughes.
But just to clear the air, I absolutely loved him until the Rangers got into the top-2 now I am declaring all players named Hughes and Kakko large-scale busts. |

For those of you that have access to the Athletic, this is a great article. It's amazing how a win here or there against certain teams played out in terms of the lottery.
