Athletic mock draft with New York taking Kakko second and Hughes going first:
No. 2. New York Rangers
Kaapo Kakko, LW, TPS-Liiga
Feb. 13, 2001 | 6-foot-2 | 190 pounds
Rick Carpiniello: The rebuilding Rangers so badly need top-end talent, and scoring, and Kakko not only brings that, but he brings it with size and probably more pure goal-scoring ability than Hughes. Getting the second pick, and Kakko, also speeds up the process for the Rangers, as Kakko should be an immediate impact player in the NHL, scouts believe.
Pronman’s take: In Kakko, the Rangers get as close to an NHL ready forward as you’ll typically get as a U18 player. Kakko is a highly skilled and competitive winger who will create chances and win battles versus NHL defenders right away. He could step in and be a top-nine, if not a top-six, forward immediately and down the road a star. He’s exactly what their rebuild needed: a true impact prospect they can build around. - airjan23

That Forward group *Could* be good enough to compete for a playoff spot. The Blue line is still an out of control tire fire. |

Yeah I just don't see two Rookies on line with a 19 year old who has 84 NHL games to his name. That is why I spaced out the forward like that. The Forwards have the ability to be instanlty fixed with a couple of trade and a couple of UFA signings. Gotta figure out if they can do anything with S cubbed. |

You guys are exactly where we were with NJ in the draft 2 years ago. Two top prospects clearly ahead of everyone else and all we needed to do was sit back and select whoever the Devils didn’t. Congrats on landing second pick. |

No. 1. New Jersey Devils
Jack Hughes, C, USNTDP-USHL
May 14, 2001 | 5-foot-10 | 168 pounds
Corey Masisak: The Devils will hope that Hughes and Nico Hischier can be their 1-2 punch at center for the next decade. As a bonus, general manager Ray Shero was Jim Hughes’ agent, er advisor, when he played in college at Providence.
Pronman’s take: In Hughes, New Jersey gets a game-breaking talent who can project to be one of its best players in a short amount of time and a star in the NHL eventually. Hughes would be the first USNTDP player to jump straight to the NHL, but that seems the likely trajectory at the moment. On Day 1, he will help an NHL team’s power play, as well as be relied on to lead the puck up ice to attempt clean zone entries and be a driver with his skating and skill. Even on a nucleus with Hischier and Hall, Hughes should emerge as a go-to option shortly.

Both are going to be very good. Idk if they will be like Matthews or Laine but that will be the comparisson. Should be fun.

Kakko Time for New York unless, by all accounts, the scouting department complicates the matter or, say, Edmonton offers Leon Draisaitl for the pick. Not even bothering to cite convention, Gorton wouldn’t disclose the name of the intended.
“I would never say something like that,” Gorton said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done.”
The GM, however, pledged, “We won’t take a goaltender … in the first round.”
I'm not gonna be able to sleep. |

Kakko has the chance to best offensive player this organization has draft since Amonte or Weight. It's kind of crazy. If he can be like Laine then it's a gift. - tomburton99

I'm still mad they traded Weight and Amonte. |

You're not wrong but it was a steep price if you consider the dark years post 97. |

I know. Neil Smith always hated trading Amonte, Keenan kinda forced him I believe. That was the all in years of all in years, truly a Stanley Cup or bust |

This is pretty impressive
Kakko, who turned 18 in February, had one of the most productive seasons for a draft-eligible player in recording 22 goals and 38 points in 45 games for TPS Turku. He is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound left shooter who combines high-end skill with a physical mentality. |

Interesting that elite prospects has him an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier. I wonder which it is? |
