Hockey is now won and lost on a spreadsheet, if only it was just that easy. - LeafMan
I think fans get too angry about the “numbers”.
Numbers show a lot. It’s the closest thing we have to predicting stuff. Going off of feelings doesn’t cut it.
But also, there is a lot of bull poop luck in hockey.
So the the point is numbers tell us plenty, but luck and surprises will skew them. But they still give us the best chance at predicting something. |

Great article on the Athletic by Dom previewing the Leafs/Bruins.
Shows exactly why this is the most even series in the first round. It’s a toss up. |

I still expect some sort of Leafs bias from former players not commentators.
He seems to be doing an effort to go the opposite way. - Scabeh
Maybe. For me he's just being realistic. |

That's analysis with numbers and calculamations and stuff, and they've put it in graph form, so there's no way anyone could argue with it. - Atomic Wedgie
It’s a much better indicator than “Babcock” or “the Leafs D sucks” |

The Leafs have been playing like garbage for awhile now. They should have been better than last year with Tavares and Muzzin but their final standings didn't show it.
If they want to beat the Bruins, they have to chase Rask early in the series, even though Halak isn't all that bad either.
Bergeron vs. Matthews
Marchand vs. Tavares
Pastrnak vs. Marner
Krejci vs. Kadri
DeBrusk vs. Kapanen
Krug vs. Rielly
Rask vs. Andersen
Looks pretty even. The difference maker has to become Nylander. He has to wake up for the first time this season. |

Boston has one line. It’s a (frank)ing amazing line but this year the Leafs top 3 lines are going to
be very tough for Boston.

It doesn’t suck.
It’s not in the top echelon of the league. That’s for sure. It’s average.
But Boston’s offence sucks
PS I don’t think Boston’s forwards sucks but in comparison to the league it’s the same to the Leafs D.
Plus their goaltending is average.
Their Defense is amazing though. Easily top 3 in the league. |

Krejci and DeBrusk don't play on the 1st line and Krejci had 73 points. And the Bruins still averaged 3 goals a game and gave up 2.59 a game. Considering the playoffs get more defensive, the Bruins still have the advantage defensively. |

20th in goals against. And Andersen doesn't suck but the GAA is still in the bottom third of the league. The Leafs defense definitely sucks. Especially the past month.
The only playoff team that gave up more goals per game than the Leafs are the Sharks and they have the opposite problem; their goalie sucks.
Boston's offense was 11th overall and therefore not equivalent to the Leafs 20th overall in GAA. |

Cool. They play on the second line and it’s nothing compared to the Leafs 2nd line.
And their 3rd line isn’t even in the same league.
Their forwards as a whole are average in comparison to the rest of the league.
Yes they have a dominant first line, it’s a huge reason in why they are an elite team. After that it’s Debrusk and Krejci who are good 2nd line players. Then meh. |

Playoffs is a lot more than scoring goals. If anything, the Bruins forwards are good at preventing goals which is usually helpful in winning playoff series compared to trying to list point totals and going off that. |

I love how you just say the forwards are good at preventing goals.
Why? Give me proof. I don’t see it.
They have an elite D. That’s why they are good at defence. |

Boston finished tied in points with the Western leader Calgary. It could be argued they are the second best team in the NHL. They also did this with injuries to their best players for long stretches. They are underrated if anything. |

You said it's a lot more than scoring goals but yet point to Kreicjis 73 points to suggest hes on par with Matthew's.
Leafs have more depth on the forwards. End of story. |

I don’t care about a few wins and a few losses there.
It really doesn’t make a team better or worse. It’s a long season in which their are ups and downs.
The Leafs have the better team this year and finished with a tad less points. poop happens. But just saying a team has a few more points isn’t enough for me. |

It’s just funny.
“The Bruins forwards are better at D”
Huh? Why?
How are they preventing goals better than the Leafs? Where’s the proof? Do they more have possession of the puck to prevent them? Blocks? I’m curious. |
