my questions with that center around how much ownership wanted him gone after those "lost love" comments plus how much his contract had a hand in the return
- Michael Pachla

I don't really want to get into the ROR and Eichel thing, Eichel needed to listen when he was trying to be helped by a certain player to better his game going forward. This firing is not on Eichel.

Not to defend Housley but Botterill put this team together and the ROR trade was really bad.
- SABRES 89

Would have preferred to see botts fired.

It's mostly his roster. And he has been acquiring future cap that is basically dead money.

Scandella
Hunwick
Sheary
Edit:Sobotka

I feel 19/20 might be a rough year again if they cannot get a take on both Bgosian and Scandella.

Botterill's number one job has been getting their long term cap situation cleaned up and getting them cap space going forward, of which he has done a remarkable job.
- kingcong39

yes, he has and that ror move was instrumental...just...man it looks bad right now

there has been...they're on their third gm with a mixture of players cobbled from each regime

Yeah that is the thing, it's been patchwork. As pointed out above this Boterill cleaned up some cap messes and such. Ok so he has been in and work in progress, but you would have thought he would hire the coach to see that work through knowing it was a work in progress to still clean things up and get the roster where you want it. Seems like there is a plan but they don't have the pieces in place. All that change just adds to the muddying the waters so to speak.

Right or wrong Shanny had the plan, he put the people to see it through in place, hired the guy they wanted and for right or wrong, good or bad, this is the plan make it work and happen. Not sure if it's impatience or what but just seems like there is a few holes in the actual plan to make it happen.

He's acquired future cap for 1-2 seasons in place of cap they had that lasted for years. HUGE difference.

And if the Leafs get bounced in the 1st or even 2nd round, how hot will Babcock's seat be?

Not when you were suppose to he coming off the rebuild.

He has acquired 20 mil since last year in dead money, he lucked out with Berglund. He is in over his head.

I've pointed out on many occasions the layers of hockey people for the leafs put together at that crucial juncture a few years ago...pegulas are stubborn and there's no one between the them and Botterill...they put a lot on his plate and he's managed it rather well, imo

That last sentence is total nonsense to me. Botterill has shown to be highly capable, especially when it comes to the cap.

Agree to disagree.

That trade looking bad for one year was never the point of the trade. It was and is about the long term, which we will see play out over the next few years.

am of the opinion that too much was thrown at him...however, I think he's done a good job muddling through this and solidifying the farm system...he has a vision, and it's a modern vision of the nhl

Where has he?

A cap specialist? Hunwick 2.25, Sheary 3, Scandella 4, Sobtoka 3.25(or something like that) acquired pominville with 2 years at 5.6.

Yeah great utilization of the cap.

Homie said he had the opportunity to trade Bogosian during the offseason we hired Phil.

Over. His. Head.

I think the biggest take away here we still don't know what the plan is with the sabres... when the bills hired McD and Beane the plan was pretty clear from the beginning... and now going into year three it's crystal clear.

the sabres the "plan" is not clear... "we are going to run an up tempo game" and they bring in older slower guys that don't fit the plan... and sabres land say WTF are we doing??? then they trade payers away and bring in younger guys that again don't fit what we are supposed to be doing.... WHAT THE HELL IS THE PLAN WITH THE SABRES?

this is my biggest problem with Botts and the owners right now....

And when does all that cap end? This offseason and next. Sounds like a good job to me.

How? Only pommers deal ends this offseason.

He didnt need to acquire many of those players. So seams like dumb trades. Much prefer ththat 5.25 this offseason than hunwick and sheary.

His lone bright spot was trading for Skinner. However it's starting to look like he should have been dealt at the deadline.

Looks like Florida is already closing in on Quennville. For some reason they see potential in a proven, multi-cup winning coach.

Weird...

- Deuce81

pretty sure bowman is the only coach to win cups with different teams in the last 65 years

It’s gotta be Scandella

And Okposo wasn’t actually that horrible,
it’s just his contract that is

Housley had to go after that second half
But this roster was super flawed
Idk what coach would’ve gotten us to the playoffs with it?

Botts has A LOT of work to do still

It may be total nonsense to you, good.
The fact is Metal is spot on.

You owe it to yourself to look-up Bott's moves and the cap implications he himself brought here.
The ROR deal is about the only one where he brought more cap flexibility, but only after 2 years and that was only $3.5 more flexibility after Sobotka's contract expires next year. The fact Berglund had a mental breakdown was the single biggest "move" to improve the cap situation.
