The difference being that the wall wouldn't have played with the Obama constituency. Democrats can't lose the Hispanic vote and that's the identity politics.

And that's why the immigration issue really frustrates me. It doesn't seem to me that politicians actual give that much of a damn about immigration reform, and just use it as a playing chip to appeal to subsections of their constituency. Want the hispanics? Pretend like you love immigrants and pay lip service to sanctuary cities. Your primary base is lower class whites? Make a big fuss about how immigration is steal their jobs. Wanna get middle class suburban whites? Play up every time a foreigner commits a crime in the news cycle and raise paranoia.

The shame is that our immigration policy is actually super dumb and needs a lot of reform, but this made up battle over whether or not we should let immigrants in or not in the first place is taking center stage and holding back any real reform.

This. 100% this. The politicians don’t give a flying (frank) about an issue if their voters don’t. Reform that works will never happen until we get them to buckle down and work on the damn issue. Immigration will always be part of this country in some form. Make it work in a reasonable way is all we ask.

Yep. What sucks is you’ll see some versions of ideas work great in one country that sound awesome but would never be feasible in a system as oddly designed as the US.

Mayor Pete is actually doing really well and I wouldn't be surprised if he surged once debates actually start. Some of his views concern me a good deal, but fortunately he's pretty pragmatic so I think he's just paying lip service to win over progressives. The dude pretty much single handily revitalized South Bend, so while he's not the most qualified candidate, he has my full attention as a guy I can actually feel good about voting for.

Beto is a total shlub. He's just Irish Obama: stands for nothing and talks pretty, and is even more less qualified than Mayor Pete. The only reason why he's relevant is because he's an attractive, charismatic white dude who stood up to Cruz, whom everybody hates.

Yep. It’s interesting how a lot of people who tell women they can’t do something to their children to harm them in womb are anti vaxxers who let their children risk dying of very preventable diseases.

I've actually become in favor of UBI if it replaces entitlements. At this point, there's no going back on the welfare state and I think UBI would be a much more efficient way of providing welfare than huge, one sized fits all healthcare and education programs.

Issue is that the progressive wing that's usually in favor of UBI wants it on top of existing and even expanded entitlements, which I think will just lead to mass inflation.

I see and kind of agree with it, honestly. I’m just always been of the mindset that it’s a health and welfare situation for the woman to decide. I’m not a fan of them, just a begrudged supporter, if that makes any sense.

Obviously I'm Catholic so I have a very specific view on this, but its hard for me not to agree with Louis CK on this one. Abortion is either killing a baby or taking a poop. If you think abortions should be infrequent, safe, and legal, why do you think that? If you believe that the child is a legitimate human life but abortions are fine, why are we not protecting that life? That's pretty abhorrent. On the other hand, if you think that but don't think a fetus qualify as human life, why do you care if it's infrequent? Its just a non-sentient mass of tissue and fluid that flushing out would be no different than taking a poop.

Because the government wouldn't have to create and maintain large scale federal programs that cost a (frank) ton of money and cost more when people abuse them. You give someone a lump sum and say "Spend this on your welfare as you see fit." that's it. No more money or upkeep is involved. Also, when you're maintaining a big welfare apparatus its inherently one size fits all that everyone is paying into via taxes. So you have a bunch of young people buying into a ton fo health care they don't need to subsidize older people, while having a bunch of professionals getting taxed out their ass paying into universal education that they don't themselves need anymore (subsidizing school for young people). You give out a UBI and let young people pay for school while old people pay for their healthcare and you no longer need people subsidizing each other and can reduce taxes across the bored.

That's obviously a gross oversimplification of the idea I'm playing with but you get my drift. Its customizable to each person's needs. Someone decides they don't need school or healthcare and just want groceries and a nicer home, they have that option too.
