Easier said that done

It’s not like they’ve been trying to hire the “wrong” people

- jdfitz77

right, the leg work in finding these people can get complex/messy but the actual road map is fairly standard.

It’s not like ppl were saying that Murray or Botts were poor choices
Most said good things about the hirings

Is there someone in particular u want?
Or are u just gonna keep hitting us with obvious hindsight?

If we got Jack Hughes it would be like Sidney Crosby and Malkin type combo for years

I’m not comparing him to Malkin lol he’s more Johnny Goudreau

Is Hughes projected to be better than Eichel and Matthews?

Im not saying any of this as hindsight or that Botts was a poor hire, rather that the issues surrounding this team aren't some deep rooted culture issue or dark cloud that poisons everyone.

Nobody in Toronto thought they would ever be good again, until they hired the right guys and were really good again. But for years it was "ownership this and media that"

I’d say MacKinnon is a good comparable to Hughes
Ppl have said Pat Kane or Gaudreau also,
but they’re wingers

Small-ish (5’10, but only 165lbs), so like most draft picks he will need to add weight & muscle
Fantastic skater with tons of skill & good hockey sense
Also known as a 200ft player at this point

At minimum,
he’s an AllStar caliber player
Potential “franchise” leader
Said to have a good head on his shoulders too

I don’t know about better but he belongs in the conversation. Eichel went to play college and Matthews went to play in Europe so they played against better competition in their respective draft years. However Hughes has completely dominated the U18 circuit. The only question I have about Hughes is size and if he’ll still play Centre at the NHL level however the size factor worked out for P.Kane, Gaudreau, and Debrincant.

There's always room for highly skilled, but "undersized" players. You mention some excellent examples and Briere, Marner and Fleury also come to mind.

Based on what 89 and Homie have said about Eichel, I'm wondering if management decides to go in a totally different direction, would Buffalo be able to snag the #1 pick (Hughes) for Eichel.

Now, before others shred me on this. I'm not saying the Sabres should do this, just curious as to whether that would be considered a fair trade by NHL clubs.

Of course, if Buffalo wins the lottery, then it becomes moot.

So what’s the take on the Podkolzin kid ? Is he worth the risk ? Seems to me that eventually they ALL want to play in the NHL at some point.

This is what you hold up to support your argument to hire the right guys?
A GM that brought in alcoholics, drug users and morons?
The Kings won 2 championships with a core that was made up of dudes hopped up on narcotics, binge drinkers, abusers, problem children and guys who couldn't speak english. They were a dominant possession team in an era where teams ignored it and they prospered. Oh and Darryl Sutter of all people was their coach

IMO he is the second best player in the draft and if he was playing over here, could have gone first overall

I’d grab him.

Looks to me worst case we pick 3rd. Have to assume Hughes and Kakko are gone. I think you could plug any of the three onto an NHL roster right now.

I've read a lot about him, and everyone basically says the guy is very talented and has an endless motor, great in the dzone. Problem is, I think his brain lags behind his talent, and his offensive numbers aren't that special. He's a strange prospect, and we don't really know how he feels about playing in the AHL or if he'd rather stay in Russia until the NHL calls him to play full time. More-so, the vision/hockey IQ are what seems to be his knock, along with his offense, which is why scouts are all over the place on him.

Dude,
That is like saying the key to winning is to win games, just win games.
