See, already declining. Next year it'll be 4th at absolute best. After that, might not even be able to climb on the bike. - prock

So any follow-up explanation on how 46-point Joe Thornton is equivalent to 90+ point Joe Thornton? You think the Sharks are contending because of Thornton? Do you watch the West? Are Hertl and Meier just names you see on the box scores or have you ever watched them play? And this is the best Sharks team ever? Oh boy. |

Yes, I'm sure, he'll be among the 0.000001% of NHL players that are effective into their 40s. I mean, Jagr was half as effective as he was in his prime, I'm sure Giordano will be at like 90%, and buck the aging trend that 99.999999% of human beings go through do.
I think you're probably right.
Now, I wouldn't normally do this, but if you give me some good odds, I'll place a small bet with you. How about say, $100 that Giordano doesn't score 40 points in the 2023/24 season? If you win, you get $100. If I win, you give me $1000?
out of curiousity, who was the last defenseman aged 40 and up to score 40 points? Not Chelios. Not Chara. Lidstrom - Found him. He might be the only one in history. I'll keep checking.
Edit - Lidstrom is the only one in the last 40 years to do it. But no worries, I'm sure Giordano will have no issues following in Lidstrom's footsteps. So how bout that bet?
Next Edit - confirmed, Lidstrom is the only Dman in history to score 40 points in a season past the age of 40. Cool fact. - prock

that's arguable. Giordano is pretty old and without him playing at Norris level, are the Flames really all that good?
And the chances of him being in the NHL in 5 years, let alone "good for at least 5", are slim to none. - prock
Its kind of like this, if Bettman hadn't of allowed Vegas to essentially pick the team they wanted and were like every other expansion team in the last 30 years (f'n brutal), would hockey still be relevant in Vegas?
Point is he continues to play better despite his age... its a bit of tongue and cheek kind of like a hockey fan in Las Vegas...

I think Boston needs to be added to list, their window is closing too with older players. - BlackhawkMike
I say they have 2 solid years. Then they re tool a bit. They have Krejci and Backes contracts expire. Chara will go as long he wants. They still have young players coming up that need these years to develop as well. |

Carolina hanging in there with the Cup champs. But Ek is predicting they lose 7 in a row and miss the playoffs. Solid! |

Giordano has played far fewer NHL games that most guys his age...2/3rds of his NHL points came AFTER his 30th birthday.
He is like the 4th guy in NHL history to have a 70 point season after 35...he is already in the .00000001%
Then look at the rest of the Flames D...4 guys 22 or under have played regular minutes...as Gio declines you have to assume they improve.
Flames are likely just entering their window...for Christ sake they have 5 70 point players which hasn't happened in 20 years and they are all young other than Gio.
Sorry but the Flames are likely to be a top team for a while, deal with it |

I don’t think St. Louis is in a “win or else” situation. They have a few bigger contracts coming off the books in the offseason and quite a few promising prospects just about ready to move up. All the key players are locked down for now, many of them in their prime. If they make a few good moves in the offseason, I’d say next year could be a win now scenario. That said, if they pull off a miracle, going from last in the league to winning the cup this season, I won’t care what happens for a while. |

I hate the "teams want to avoid team X in the first round" argument.
If you are hoping to avoid certain teams, you are scared and not playing like a champion. To be the best, somewhere along the line you have to beat the best. Cliche but true. Hoping to back in to an easy first round match up is silly and I dismiss any analyst that says "who wants to play X right now?" as foolish. |

you or I aren't playing anyone at all, so if we want to avoid certain teams, it says nothing at all about how the team we're a fan of is playing. |
