Totally disagree with you on this. The way Gio plays and the fact that he is somewhat of a late bloomer, so he has not many miles on the odometer, means that he will still have lots to give until he is 40. Chelios played til he was 41-42. Chara is still playing at 41. There is absolutely no indication that Gio can't match that longevity and his compete level and determination are some of his biggest assets and they will ensure that he continues to play hard. He has been an underdog most of his career and comments like yours from the masses will continue to motivate him.

First off Gio's stats are inflated by a nice uptick in secondary assists.
Secondly you cited probably the two biggest gym rat/workout warriors ever.
Gio is going to see a sharp decline soon. Just accept it. |

Chelios was 48...I mean maybe he stopped playing at 42, but he was still around longer... - mgriffen
Thanks for the correction - I should have looked it up before writing it.

I think Boston needs to be added to list, their window is closing too with older players. |

"First off Gio's stats are inflated by a nice uptick in secondary assists". So - what is your point? Points are points are points - every player gets primaries and secondary assists, why are secondary assists not worth much all of a sudden for Gio? Pretty lame comment there bud!
Gio has been pretty much the fittest Flame every year at training camp. This past year Frolik beat him - but Gio was second. His fitness level is a factor in his longevity. Gio's upcoming decline is being GREATLY exaggerated by some - including you. We will see how it plays out but I'd put money on it that he is still playing at an elite level in 2 years time - and still in the league in 5 year's time.

how do you make a list like this, and leave off what could very well be the number 1 team on it? Columbus went all in, and if they don't get anywhere, they're left with very little. - prock

He is right that Toronto didn't give up mid round picks to try and improve...they gave up a first round pick. Do trades not matter if they happen more than a couple days before the deadline? If Dubas and company thought it was hopeless, would they have even bothered to get Muzzin? |

Yes, I'm sure, he'll be among the 0.000001% of NHL players that are effective into their 40s. I mean, Jagr was half as effective as he was in his prime, I'm sure Giordano will be at like 90%, and buck the aging trend that 99.999999% of human beings go through do.
I think you're probably right.
Now, I wouldn't normally do this, but if you give me some good odds, I'll place a small bet with you. How about say, $100 that Giordano doesn't score 40 points in the 2023/24 season? If you win, you get $100. If I win, you give me $1000?
out of curiousity, who was the last defenseman aged 40 and up to score 40 points? Not Chelios. Not Chara. Lidstrom - Found him. He might be the only one in history. I'll keep checking.
Edit - Lidstrom is the only one in the last 40 years to do it. But no worries, I'm sure Giordano will have no issues following in Lidstrom's footsteps. So how bout that bet?
Next Edit - confirmed, Lidstrom is the only Dman in history to score 40 points in a season past the age of 40. Cool fact. |

Think leaving out Columbus was a huge oversight and mistake given they went all in and spent what they did. Just look at that cost and the potential to lose all those players at season end. They had better get to round 2 or that fanbase SHOULD be right pissed off!
Think there is also some pressure on the Pens as their top talent gets older and the GM has made a few moves that have upset the fanbase too. Do they have one more cup in them somehow?! That window is closing and you know that rabid loyal fanbase wants one more at least in there.

I mean, even Chelios and Chara were shadows of their former selves at age 40. Age 36 or 37 even. The last time Chara scored 40 points he was 36 years old. The last time chelios scored 40 he was 35. |

See, already declining. Next year it'll be 4th at absolute best. After that, might not even be able to climb on the bike. |
