Don't forget, the cap will be 95-100 million within 3 years. The issue for the Leafs is next season. After that they are in good shape.
Seattle expansion will put up the cap 5-7 million the summer after Seattle comes in. There's also the MGM deal coming in.
And contrary to popular belief due to the media not reporting the cap of there teams, contenders like Winnipeg and Tampa have major cap issues this summer. Why do people act like only the Leafs have a cap? - RogerRoeper
We do know they will have issues. That’s what Myers might get an offer from someone from the Peg. I’ll say for anyone including the Rangers, while it’s very possible the cap is that high in a few years, you can’t 100% bank on it. Especially if there is a work stoppage in the next couple seasons, you don’t know what that cap number will be. As much as salaries have skyrocketed even for middle tier players, we don’t know what the salaries will be either.

But how do they conjure up two more good defensemen outta thin air?

So when you look at the Ranger roster moving forward, you must get really down in the dumps. |

Yeah the Rangers roster is circa Leafs during the Kessel/Phanuef era. Very bad. But if the Leafs can turn it around, anybody can.

Sorry I missed all the back and forth with Toronto fans today. Something that needs to be addressed:
Lets say that the Rangers offer sheet Kapanan for 4 years $16 mill dollars. If Toronto matches, they CANNOT TRADE Kapanan for one calendar year. They either match $$ and keep him or accept the Rangers 2nd round pick. By matching, the Leafs will certainly be in a bind, and teams will look to capitalize on this weakness. Nylander or Brown could be traded to clear cap space, but I doubt that you would get even value.
Offer sheets are rarely used, that is true, but this is a unique situation and I am sure some team ( if not the Rangers ) will exploit it...

Finally someone with some knowledge who knows what he’s talking about. I would of had a better argument with the wall then with that guy. There goes his match and sign theory |

interesting - did not know that. Also, if the leafs match and intend to trade, teams know they're in a bind and in cap hell so they would try to get him for pennies on the dollar. |

Toronto has made their own mess
they had enough offensive firepower, they didn't have to sign Tavares, it was completely unnecessary
they should have gone after McDonagh when they had the chance |

No way man. They are winning the cup. James Tanner told me so. |

It doesn't even bug me when opposing fans trash the Rangers right now. We are tanking and selling off our best players. We should suck. It isn't an insult to say how bad we are, its a strategy at this point. |

No I just meant that the Maple Leafs have a slew of issues and James Tanner is an idiot. As for the Rangers, they don't suck enough. They keep tallying up points and it's annoying. |

Imagine thinking drafting 12th overall is better than draft in the top 5? This isn't just about you either. A good fraction of Ranger fans want so see them compete and "build winning habits." Cool, to bad this team has been bad for now 2 plus years and are trying to tank. and yet have have been to stupid to do so. This is my hell. Have fun never beng good enough to never actually win anything. |

Tom, I am on the same page as you(right now) but I understand where people are coming from. Sometimes the stink/culture of losing that gets created is hard to shake. I think it is a legitimate concern. |

What do the Rangers have to lose by doing it right now?
Edit: It can't be done right now, but hypothetically speaking. The Rangers already screwed themsleves by winning shootouts and going to OT. |
