I believe Ray Ferraro said the other day that every player doesn't have to be a 200 ft monster. Boeser's scoring rate is good enough to not have to be the 200 ft monster like Sutter and Beagle.

Barrie is 9th in scoring right now, Krug 12th, Spurgeon 16th, Ellis 26th.

Spurgeon is 16th in TOI, Ellis is 17th both 24 minutes a night. Barrie and Krug 62 and 66th at 21:30 respectively.

I honestly don't think anyone would be disappointed if he turned out to be like any of those players.

Spurgeon and Ellis are considered to be pretty good defenders so we'll see if Hughes can get to that level defensively. I guess I should have been more specific to Barrie lol, my bad.


I do believe most fans would be satisfied if he turned out to be Tyson Barrie 2.0, but there are some media members and homer fans who are already anointing Hughes as a top pairing dman in his prime which seems premature.

I'm hoping he can become a Tyson Barrie, if he becomes anything more that would just be gravy

I mean, they kind of are monsters in a sense. Kids are taught that monsters are scary and bad.

I can't see him playing too much PK. That leaves around 18-19 minutes a game of 5v5 and 2-3 minutes a game of PP time. So anywhere from 20-22 minutes a night puts him inside of top 62 in the NHL.

Which will help the team a lot but still leaves that true #1 that Van needs.

The Canucks are very desperate for a scoring defencemen.

His defense is actually really solid against the rush, but from what I've seen/read, he struggles once the opposing team establishes zone time/cycle.


Stecher has done a nice job this year defensively so Quinn could even learn a thing or 2 from his own undersized teammate.

Hmm both good points, i didnt notice the dzone thing much because he’s so good at being quick with his feet/stick. But i could see that being a thing. He will bulk up, got the iq to defend top guys but not the body yet. Exciting but i see a top4 giy ag the bottom of his potential and think he has a lot of the characteristics of some of the all time greats like lidstrom/niedemeyer
