Well, this debate raged about a year ago.
I think many would agree that winning is a challenge that requires a multi-faceted approach.
Yes to talent
Sure, luck is required at times...sure doesn't hurt.
Culture adds to to the probability of winning. It is hard to define and quite easily blown-off as, well in today's terms "fake news".
But it is difficult to argue with teams that seem to win more than others over long periods of time and with personnel changes involved...Patriots, Bruins, Steelers, Pens.
Yadda yadda. Players hold each other accountable table, challenge each other, and commit to buying in.
Other teams have talent as well and seem to disappoint year in and year out...Sabres are a primary example well before they started the tank. This year is another prime example. Yes, they have some sh¡ty players, but they have talented ones as well...and they quit on each other when the going gets tough. There is little accountability, little buy-in. Risto is a prime example of a talented player who actually hurts his team.
Not all of the above is "culture" to be sure...
There is far, far more to winning than talent and luck, and to blown-off culture is putting blinders on. - IonSabres
I agree.
Jcrag- is implying we have been unlucky and lack talent?
I think coaching and leadership are what's lacking with the Sabres.
Phil sucks
We have talent - high 1st round picks every year

Sports analysis is built on cliches and narratives, and 99% of the time, they're bullpoop or overblown. It's fun flowery prose that people enjoy reading. It's also complete horsepoop
Here's what wins:
Talent and luck.
We don't have enough talent, and we blew our luck load in November
Culture, veteran leadership, experience and attitude are bullpoop.
right now, we are a poor man's version of the colorado avalanche
and they are not gonna make the playoffs - homiedclown
I wouldn’t even say we are a poor mans version. We’re the same darn team. Only difference is the Western Conference was so weak that it gave the Avs something to play for while the Sabres sank into the abyss.
Avs currently hold the 2nd wildcard spot in the West after beating the Hawks today.

regarding 6K in the fall
If Luukkonen outshines Hutton and Ullmark, he should be given every opportunity to make the big club
For those that say he is too young, look at Barrasso and Murray
For those that say goalies look great for a flash and then fizzle, look at the coach and the D. Crawford was an all star a few years ago, what changed the Hawk roster, not him. Another example is Lehner, looked like an ECHL goalie for us, give him a decent coach and decent D men and he is a vezina finalist 12 months later.
The amount of elite goalies today can be counted on 1 hand, with fingers to spare
The gap between goalie 4 and goalie 24 is not the goalie performance, but rather the team in front of him
It's time this fall to ice the BEST 18 skaters in the organization with the big club and have the 2 best goalies in the system wearing the blue and gold
enough of excuses, and patience, and development
any kid is gonna learn a hell of a lot more practicing with the big club then playing along side kevin porter or tennyson in rochester or some 17 year old in an ontario hockey league
time to make the statement now that if you belong here and work hard you get a spot, if you go through the motions, GET THE HELL OUT OF TOWN

Goalffsson with 2 snipes. Rochester leads 4-2 over the Marlies. Both goals were of the Kucherov quality. I’m hoping we have something with this guy. - Pegullaville

Maybe you may have known some of the guys who played in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, with an elastic band of a wrist shot but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a release as good as Olofssons wrist shot.
